Current Affairs June 2014

  • The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on 1 June 2014 won the seventh edition of Indian Premier League 2014 by defeating Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by three wickets in the final played at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. This is the second title triumph for KKR after their maiden win back in 2012.
  • The Forbes magazine released 100 most Innovative Growth Companies List on 28 May 2014. New Zealand software accounting firm Xero topped the list with an enterprise value of 4.4 billion US dollars.  Godrej Consumer Products topped among the Indian firms and was ranked 31st with an enterprise value of 4.25 billion US dollars.
  • Mahindra Group Chairman Anand G Mahindra on 29 May 2014 became the first Indian to receive the prestigious Harvard Medal. The award was presented during the Harvard's 363rd Commencement at the annual meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association.
  • Chandrashekhar Rao was sworn-in as the first Chief Minister of Telengana, which became the 29th state of Indian Union. He took oath administered by the Governor ESL Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on 2 June 2014.
  • Peter Mutharika was sworn-in as President of Malawi on 31 May 2014.  He won the presidential election of Malawi by defeating previous President Joyce Banda. The result was announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on 30 May 2014.
  • German Chancellor, Angela Merkel topped the Forbes annual list of Most Powerful Women 2014 in the world.
  • Former left wing rebel leader Salvador Sanchez Ceren was sworn-in as the President of El Salvador on 1 June 2014. Sanchez of Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front party (FMLN) is the first former guerrilla commander to lead the Central American country.
  • Wrestlers Yogeshwar Dutt and Sushil Kumar on 1 June 2014 won Gold and Silver respectively at the International wrestling tournament held in Sassari city of Italy.
  • Union Rural Development Minister, Gopinath Munde of BJP died in a road accident in Delhi on 3 June 2014. Munde was sworn-in as the Cabinet Minister for Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation and Rural Development on 26 May 2014.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on 31 May 2014 approved the appointment of Kavery Banerjee as Secretary, Department of Posts.
  • The Indian Air Force (IAF) and French Air Force (FAF) commenced the bilateral exercise Garuda V on 2 June 2014 at Jodhpur Air Base. The bilateral air exercise is fifth in the series and will end on 13 June 2014.
  • India became the 2nd largest exporter of global textiles after China. This was revealed by a recent data released by the UN Comtrade.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced second Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement on 3 June 2014. RBI in its second bi-monthly monetary policy statement has kept the policy rates unchanged.
  • The Palestinian National Unity Government of Hamas and Fatah was sworn-in on 2 June 2014 by the Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas in West Bank City of Ramallah. With the formation of new government, the Hamas government in Gaza strip resigned.
  • Hashim Amla was appointed as new test captain of South African cricket team on 3 June 2014.
  • The Global Day of Parents was observed across the world on 1 June 2014.
  • The Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) and Grant Thornton India LLP on 3 June 2014 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Delhi. The MoU was signed to develop capacity of the Indian companies for effective implementation of the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Rules laid in Section 135 of the Companies Act 2013.
  • Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad won the Roll of Excellence award. The award was given by Airport Council International (ACI) in Seoul, South Korea on 27 May 2014.
  • President Bashar al-Assad of Syria won the Presidential election for the third time. The Presidential Election result was announced by the Parliament Speaker Jihad Laham on 4 June 2014.
  • Sumitra Mahajan was unanimously elected as Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha on 6 June 2014. She replaced Meira Kumar and became the second women presiding officer of the Lok Sabha.
  • Jordan Prince, Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein, the Jordan’s Ambassador to the United Nations was nominated as UN High Commissioner for human rights. He was nominated by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 6 June 2014.
  • Chester Nez, the last of the World War II Navajo code talkers died on 4 June 2014. He died at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the age of 93. He was one of the 29 Navajos who created an unbreakable code that was never broken by any one.
  • Sanjay Kapoor was on 5 June 2014 appointed as Micromax Chairman. Sanjay Kapoor was a former CEO of Bharti Airtel company.
  • Kamal Nath a leader of Congress party was sworn-in as the pro tem Speaker of 16th Lok Sabha on 4 June 2014.
  • Norman Willis, the former Trades Union Congress (TUC) General Secretary died on 7 June 2014. He was 81. He was the person, who led TUC during the most difficult years in the trade union movenment’s history. The movement saw challenges of the miners' strike and Mrs Thatcher's onslaught on trade unionism.
  • Kawa Music Group of Jaipur, Rajasthan is set to perform during the XX Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland. The CWG 2014 will be held from 23 July to 3 August 2014.
  • State government of Madhya Pradesh appointed Madhuri Dixit as the brand ambassador of maternal and child health campaign, Mamta Abhiyan. The campaign will kick off from 26 June 2014 with an event organised in collaboration of Bhopal unit of UNICEF.
  • 40th G-7 summit 2014 was held at Justus Lipsius building, Brussels at the Council of the European Union on 4 June 2014 – 5 June 2014.
  • Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricket captain, joined the Mudgal Committee on IPL spot-fixing as an expert on cricketing affairs on 8 June 2014.
  • UN General Assembly on 7 June 2014 announced an award in honour of Nelson Mandela. The award was announced to pay tribute to the achievements and contribution of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.
  • Nara Chandrababu Naidu was sworn-in as the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation. Governor E S L Narasimhan administered the oath of Naidu and his cabinet at Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur on 8 June 2014.
  • Petro Poroshenko was sworn-in as the President of Ukraine in Kiev on 7 June 2014. He was elected as President on 25 May 2014 with more than 54 percent of the vote.
  • Rafael Nadal (rank no. 1) of Spain won the French Open title 2014 for the ninth time on 8 June 2014. He is the first men to win five French Open titles in a row. He won against Novak Djokovic (rank no. 2) of Yugoslavia with 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and 6-4 in the final.
  • Wang Yi, the Foreign Minister of China was on a two-day long visit to India from 8 June to 9 June 2014. He visited India in the capacity of Special Envoy of the President of China, Xi Jinping. The objective of the visit was to establish contact with the new Government of India led by Narendra Modi.
  • Former Brazilian striker, Fernando Lucio da Costa died on 7 June 2014 in a helicopter crash in central Brazil at the age of 36. The helicopter crashed in Aruana with five people on board.
  • Former army chief Abdel Fattah el-Sisi was sworn-in as the President of Egypt in Cairo on 8 June 2014. He is the fifth Egyptian President to come from Army and will be the president for four years.
  • Miss Nevada Nia Sanchez on 8 June 2014 was crowned as Miss USA 2014. She is the 63rd winner of the Miss USA beauty contest. The ceremony was held at the Baton Rouge Civic Center in Louisiana.
  • Reserve Bank of India on 9 June 2014 eased the KYC norms for opening bank account. In its notification it said that only one documentary proof of address (either the current or permanent) can be used to open bank account or for periodic updation. 
  • PK Mishra on 9 June 2014 was appointed as the additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. He is a retired IAS officer of 1972 batch of the Gujarat cadre.
  • Senior advocate Ranjit Kumar was on 7 June 2014 appointed as the Solicitor General of India.
  • Sri Lanka and Seychelles has signed 6 agreements of bilateral importance in presence of Mahinda Rajapaksa and James Michael in Victoria.
  • MK Narayanan tendered his resignation to President, few days after being questioned by the CBI as a witness in VVIP chopper deal.
  • Indian cueist, Pankaj Advani won his maiden IBSF 6-Red World snooker title at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt by defeating Kacper Flilpiak of Poland.
  • Saina Nehwal won 750000 US dollar Australian Open Super Series by defeating Carolina Marin of Spain in straight-game played at Sydney.
  • Jean-Claude Juncker on 26 June 2014 was named as the next president of the European Commission.
  • Indian Olympic Association announced the dates of 35th National Games. The games will be held from 31 January to 14 February 2015 in Kerala.
  • Additional secretary A.K. Dubey on 25 June 2014 was appointed as Chairman of Coal India Limited with immediate effect.
  • The in-exile-President of BCCI, N Srinivasan has been appointed as the first Chairperson of ICC for a period of two years from 2014 to 2016.
  • North Korean leader, Kim Jong replaced his defence minister Jang Jong-Nam with General General Hyon Yong-Chol.
  • Chung Hung Won was retained as PM of South Korea.
  • The book titled Warrior State: Pakistan in the Contemporary World written by T V Paul was presented to the Vice President Hamid Ansari
  • Indian scientist Rasik Ravindra was elected as member of UN’s body focused on oceans and law of the sea by securing support of all 111 members.
  • Indian pistol shooter, Jitu Rai won silver medal in the men’s 10-meter air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup Shooting in Munich.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi released commemorative postage stamps on the 2014 FIFA World Cup that is being played in Brazil.
  • World Day Against Child Labour was observed across the world on 12 June 2014.
  • Canara Bank opened its seventh overseas branch in New York, USA after London, Leicester (UK), Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bahrain and Johannesburg.
  • ATOMEXPO-2014 Nuclear Energy Forum was held in Moscow from 9 to 11 June 2014.
  • Vishal Sikka on 11 June 2014 was appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Infosys.
  • Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithaa launched Amma Salt, a product of Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation limited under the State Industries Department.
  • India won 2 Gold, 5 Silver and 5 Bronze medals at 16th Asian Junior Athletics Championship.
  • BL Joshi, the Governor of Uttar Pradesh resigned from his post on 17 June 2014.
  • Shaktikanta Das on 14 June 2014 was appointed as the new Revenue Secretary.
  • Australia won the Men’s hockey World Cup title 2014 for second successive time.
  • Left-arm spinner Murali Kartik on 14 June 2014 announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
  • Malayalam writer C Radhakrishnan selected for the prestigious Moortidevi Award for 2013 for his novel Theekkadal Katanhu Thirumadhuram.
  • India won the Bangladesh series 2-0. The third and final ODI was abandoned due to incessant rain in Mirpur, near Dhaka.
  • Rajeev Topno was appointed as Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ACC headed by PM Narendra Modi approved the name.
  • Nita Ambani on 18 June 2014 was appointed as the Director of Reliance Industries.
  • Kolkata recorded the highest cigarette consumption in India.
  • N Srinivasan has been appointed as the chief of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association for the 14th Consecutive year.
  • AB De Villiers of South Africa eclipsed Virat Kohli to become number one batsman in ODI batsman ranking released on 22 June 2014.
  • Shashidhar Reddy, the Vice Chairman of NDMA along with five other members resigned from their posts. NDMA is headed by the PM.
  • Gujarat's Chief Minister announced 33 percent reservation for women in police force of the state that comes in effect from new recruitment in all cadres.
