1.    Next BRICS Summit to be held in Russia 
i. The next year's BRICS Summit will be held in the Russian city of Ufa after the grouping's successful meeting in Brazil that saw an agreement being reached on establishing a development bank and a contingency reserve arrangement
. 
ii. "Brazil, India, China and South Africa convey their appreciation to Russia for its offer to host the Seventh BRICS Summit in 2015 in the city of Ufa and extend their full support to that end," the BRICS leaders said in the Fortaleza Declaration. 
iii. Ufa is the capital city of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, and the industrial, economic, scientific and cultural centre of the republic. 
iv. The sixth summit held here was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia, Xi Jinping of China, Jacob Zuma of South Africa and Dilma Rousseff of Brazil, as they deliberated on global economic, political and strategic issues. 
v. BRICS Summit last night decided to establish the New Development Bank with an initial authorised capital of USD 100 billion for which the initial subscribed capital will be equally shared by the founding members, a point New Delhi emphasised to prevent domination by anyone of the members. 
vi. During the summit, agreement was also reached on establishing a contingency reserve arrangement with an initial size of USD 100 billion. 

vii. Russia, India, China and South Africa also extend their warm appreciation to the Government and people of Brazil for hosting the Sixth BRICS Summit in Fortaleza. 
2.    India to host IBSA Summit next year
i. India will host the next summit of IBSA (India, Brazil, South Africa) in New Delhi in 2015, giving importance to the grouping notwithstanding the BRICS forum of which these countries are also members.
ii. This was agreed to at a meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi had with South African President Jacob Zuma in Brasilia on Wednesday night on the sidelines of the summit BRICS leaders held with South American leaders.
iii. New Delhi will also host the India Africa Forum meeting this December.
iv. Both leaders recognised the importance of IBSA as a forum of members who have long established democracies and similarities of views on various matters of international agenda of political and economic consequences.
3.    India has 3rd-highest number of HIV-infected people: UN
i. India has the third-highest number of people living with HIV in the world with 2.1 million Indians accounting for about four out of 10 people infected with the deadly virus in the Asia—Pacific region, according to a UN report.
ii. The report by UNAIDS, the United Nations programme on HIV/AIDS, said that 19 million of the 35 million people living with the virus globally do not know their HIV—positive status and so ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030 will require smart scale—up to close the gap.
iii. The first—ever UNAIDS ‘Gap Report’ said after sub—Saharan Africa, the region with the largest number of people living with HIV is Asia and the Pacific.
iv. At the end of 2013, there were an estimated 4.8 million people living with HIV across the region.
v. Six countries - China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam - account for more than 90 per cent of the people living with HIV in the region.
4.    IMF welcomes establishment of BRICS bank 
i. The International Monetary Fund has welcomed the move to set up a new BRICS development bank stating that it is ready to work with the Bank's leadership.
ii. IMF staff would be delighted to work with the BRICS team dedicated to this project with a view to reinforcing the cooperation among all parts of the international safety net intended to preserve financial stability in the world, she said. 
iii. "The IMF has a very strong relationship with all the BRICS nations, which are key members of this institution. We look forward to further strengthening our collaboration," she added. Meanwhile, the US refrained from making any comment on the move to set up the development bank aimed at reshaping the international financial system dominated by the West, saying that the details are yet to emerge. 
5.    Kohli takes oath as Gujarat Governor 
i. Om Prakash Kohli on Wednesday took oath as the successor of State Governor Kamla Beniwal who has been transferred to Mizoram recently.
ii. Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new Governor here.
iii. Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Vajubhai Vala, ministers and officials were present on the occasion.
6.    India and Brazil signed three agreements to strengthen the bilateral relation
i. India and Brazil on 16 July 2014 signed three agreements during the sixth BRICS Summit in Fortaleza, Brazil.
ii. The agreement was signed by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at the Brazilian President official residence the Itamaraty Palace.
iii. Narendra Modi was on a visit to Brazil to attend 6th BRICS Summit being held in Fortaleza, Brazil form 15 July to 16 July 2014. 

The three agreements signed between the two countries are

• MoU on Cooperation in the Field of Environment 
• Agreement on Space
• MoU on Cooperation in the Establishment of a consultation mechanism on mobility and consular issues.
7.    Ex-Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid elected as member of Laureus World Sports Academy
i. Indian cricket legend captain Rahul Dravid on 16 July 2014 was elected as the member of Laureus World Sports Academy. He is the 47th member of the Academy.
ii. After his election to the Academy, Dravid (nicknamed The Wall) met and played cricket with the young coaches of the Urban Academy of London’s East End.
iii. He was joined by fellow Academy member Steve Waugh, the Australian cricketing legend, who is the most successful captain in the history of Test Cricket. 
8.    Former US President Bill Clinton in Lucknow today
i. Former US president Bill Clinton is on a short visit to Lucknow today. 
ii. Chief Minister Ahkilesh Yadav received Mr. Clinton at Chodhary Charan Singh airport this noon. 
iii. Mr Clinton is scheduled to take part in a student interaction programme in a school at Jabrauli village of Mohanlal Ganj Tehsil.
iv. He will also have an interaction with children and their mothers related to Anganwadi workers and the Clinton Foundation’s health initiative programme .
9.    Malayalam filmmaker J. Sasikumar is no more
i. Renowned Malayalam filmmaker J. Sasikumar (86), who holds the record of making 141 films in his career spanning over three decades, died here on Thursday.
ii. Born Nambiathuseril Varkey John in Alappuzha, Sasikumar was credited with having made the highest number of films with the same lead actor and same lead team, and the highest number of films in a year.
iii. The director also holds the record of having worked with Prem Nazir, the late popular hero, in 84 films. Winner of the Kerala State government’s J.C.Daniel award for lifetime achievement in cinema for the year 2012, Sasikumar’s  first film Kudumbini hit the silver screen in 1964.
10.  World Cup winners Germany top FIFA rankings
i. World Cup winners Germany have been named number one in the latest rankings released by football governing body FIFA on Thursday.
ii. Joachim Loew’s side, fresh from their triumph in Rio de Janeiro, now top the standings on 1,724 points with Argentina, World Cup runners-up, second on 1,606.
iii. The Netherlands leapt 12 places to third as a result of their third-place finish in Brazil while Colombia and Belgium also benefited, moving up four and six spots to fourth and fifth respectively.
iv. World Cup hosts Brazil dropped to seventh and former number-one Spain sank to eighth. Uruguay are sixth while Switzerland and France complete the top 10.
v. Despite a disappointing World Cup, Japan move up a spot to become the best team in Asia at 45.
11.  England win toss at Lords and elect to bowl against India
i. England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bowl against India in the second cricket Test here on Thursday.
ii. Both sides have retained the XI which played in the drawn first Test in Nottingham.
