Daily GK Update 12 December 2014 - Current Affairs

1. CCEA approved implementation of Tea Development and Promotion Scheme.
i)
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 10 December 2014 approved the implementation of the Tea Development and Promotion Scheme of the Tea Board for the 12th Five Year Plan.
ii) The Cabinet approved the Scheme with a project outlay of 1425 crore rupees. The Tea Development and Promotion Scheme was proposed by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

2. Union Home Ministry removed Section 309 of IPC decriminalizing attempt to suicide
i)
The Ministry decided to remove Section 309 of IPC after 20th Law Commission recommended to decriminalize attempt to suicide.

3. India-Russia signed 20 agreements during the 15th India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi
i)
India and Russia on 11 December 2014 signed 20 agreements during the 15th India-Russia Annual Summit held in New Delhi. The agreements were signed in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russia President Vladimir Putin, who is on the official visit to India.
ii) The agreements signed included eight agreements between government entities and 12 between private enterprises and covered the fields of nuclear energy, oil and gas, health, investment, mining, media and wind power.
iii) These agreement include Russia’s help in building at least 12 nuclear reactors and a plan to manufacture advanced Russian military helicopters and defence spare parts in India

4. CBI arrests WB Transport Minister Madan Mitra
i) The West Bengal Transport Minister Mr. Madan Mitra has been arrested by the CBI in the Sharda Chit Fund scam. Mitra, a close confidante of West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee was today questioned by the CBI. The special crime branch of CBI probing the Saradha scam, had served summons on Mitra last month to appear before the agency for questioning.
ii) Mitra had taken ill and was admitted to a private nursing home. Later, he was admitted to the state-run SSKM Hospital from where he was released on November 26. Meanwhile, a city court in Kolkata today extended till 22nd of this month the judicial custody of suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh, Sudipta Sen and Debjani Mukherjee in the Saradha case.

5. Govt is committed to provide house to all by 2022
i) The government is committed to provide housing to all by 2022. Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister, M. Venkaiah Naidu said that to provide houses to 3 crore homeless people of the country is a serious challenge. Replying to supplementaries during question hour in the Lok Sbabha, today, he said the government will also develop children and disabled friendly cities. The Minister said that the government is also contemplating a new scheme of Integrated Housing for Economically Poor people.
ii) On the issue of creation of slum areas near urban population, the Minister who is also holding the charge of Urban Development said the Government is studying Maharashtra model to provide houses to slum dwellers. He said Slum Rehabilitation and Development plan is in the pipeline and government is also trying to involve private sector in providing free houses to slum dwellers.

6. Delhi HC banned Xiaomi to sell phones in India over patent issue with Ericcson
i) The Delhi High Court has asked smartphone vendor Xiaomi and its local e-commerce partner Flipkart to stop importing and selling devices in India until February 5, when the court will again hear Swedish equipment maker Ericsson's patent-infringement petition against the Chinese company.
ii) The court has asked both Flipkart and Xiaomi to furnish details on the devices sold by them so far in India that are compliant with mobile technologies 3G, EDGE and AMR and the revenue generated. According to Ericsson, its technologies are essential to manufacture these devices.

7. Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz awarded the Confucius Peace Prize 2014
i) Former Cuban Leader Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was on 9 December 2014 awarded the Confucius Peace Prize 2014 for his important contributions in eliminating nuclear war after his retirement.
ii) He was selected from more than 20 nominees including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and two organizations.

8. smail Ould Cheikh Ahmed appointed as the new head of the UNMEER
i) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Thursday appointed Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania as new special representative and head of the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response(UNMEER).
ii) Ahmed will succeed Anthony Banbury, an American, in January to lead the Ghana-based UN Ebola mission which was established in September to coordinate efforts to combat the world's worst outbreak of the virus, Xinhua reported citing the statement.
9. Anurag Jain appointed Joint Secretary in PMO
i)
Senior IAS officer Anurag Jain was appointed as Joint Secretary in Prime Minister's Office.
ii) Jain, a 1989 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, is presently working as Joint Secretary in Department of Financial Services under the Finance Ministry here, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.
iii) He has held various posts in the state including Collector, Bhopal and Secretary to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
10. Australian Cricketer David Warner completed 1000 runs in 2014
i) Australia’s David Warner completed 1000 runs in 2014 en route to his century in the second innings of the first cricket Test against India, becoming the first opener to achieve the feat in one calendar year since England skipper Alastair Cook in 2012.
ii) The left-handed batsman achieved the milestone in the first session of day 4 at the Adelaide Oval as Australia consolidated their overall lead. The batsman was bowled by Karn Sharma after 166-ball 102, laced with 11 fours and a six.
iii) India vs Australia 1st Test, Day 4: David Warner smashed his second ton of the game while Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 52 as Australia extended their lead vs India by 363 runs.
