Daily GK Update 21st April 2015 Current Affairs

1)  Sitaram Yechury elected as General Secretary of CPI (M)
Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI (M) unanimously elected Sitaram Yechury as the general secretary of the party. He is the fifth general secretary of the party.
ii) He succeeded Prakash Karat, who was the General Secretary of the party from 2005 to April 2015.
iii) He was appointed as the general secretary by 91-member Central Committee (CC) following the withdrawal of S. Ramachandran Pillai from the race. Pillai’s name was proposed by the outgoing general secretary Prakash Karat.

2)  13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice held in Doha
The 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice was held from 12 April 2015 to 19 April 2015 at Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha, Qatar. The Summit concluded with the adoption of Doha Declaration.
ii) The Doha Declaration aims at integrating crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider United Nations (UN) agenda to address social and economic challenges and to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels, and public participation.
iii) During the conference, delegates pledged action to promote justice for all, underline link between rule of law, sustainable development and by adopting a statement to that effect participants committed themselves to integrating crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider UN agenda.

3) Former Odisha CM Janaki Ballabh Patnaik passes away
Former chief minister of Odisha and ex-governor of Assam Janaki Ballabh Patnaik died at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh early today. He was 89.
ii) Patnaik went to the temple city yesterday in a special flight to attend the convocation ceremony of Rashtriya Sanskrit University.
iii) After reaching there, the veteran Congress leader was admitted to a hospital following a chest pain around mid-night but could not be saved, sources added. The dead body will be brought here by this afternoon and his last rites will be done in Puri, informed his son in law of Soumya Ranjan Patnaik.
iv) Odisha Governor S C Jamir and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the death of Patnaik while the state government announced holiday today as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

4) New species of Geckos discovered at the World Heritage Site of Hampi in Karnataka
A new species of Gecko, a type of lizard usually found in warm climates was spotted by researchers from the Osmania University in Hyderabad. It was spotted at the ruins of the World Heritage Site of Hampi in Karnataka.
ii) The gecko was named as Cnemaspis adii after a young herpetology researcher from Hyderabad, Aditya Srinivasulu.

5) Archan wins doubles titles
India’s Archana Kamath won the cadet girls’ doubles title at the French junior and cadet open in Metz.
ii) Archana, the reigning sub-junior national table tennis champion, partnered Anezka Ilcikova of the Czech Republic to defeat the French pair of Lucie Gauthier and Leili Mostafavi in the final.
iii) Archana and Ilcikova had lost the first two games but recovered to win 10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5 and clinch the gold medal. The Bengaluru player also claimed a bronze medal in the team event after a loss in the semifinals.

6) Novak Djokovic won Monte Carlo Masters title of Tennis
Novak Djokovic of Serbia won his second Monte-Carlo Masters title of Tennis. In the final clash played at Monte-Carlo, Monaco, Djokovic defeated Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
ii) With this win, 27-year-old Djokovic also became the first player to sweep the opening three ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events of a season. The previous two titles were won at Indian Wells and Miami.
iii) This was 17th straight win for the world No.1 and a 23rd Masters Crown in total, which equals with Roger Federer for second on the titles list.

7) Former Bengal U-19 Cricket captain Ankit Keshri died
Ankit Keshri, an East Bengal Club cricketer died on 20 April 2015 due to an injury sustained during a Cricket Association of Bengal's senior one-day knock-out match. He was 20.
ii) Keshri was hurt on 17 April 2015 during Bengal Division 1's match between East Bengal Club and Bhawanipore Club at Salt Lake ground. In the 44th over, he bumped into bowler Sourabh Mondal while taking a high catch and fell and lost consciousness.
iii) As a cricketer, Keshri captained the Bengal U-19 team in Cooch Behar Trophy and was in the 30-member India U-19 probables list for the 2014 Colts World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. He was also playing for Bengal A (U-23 side) in CK Nayudu national Championship.

8) Nasim Zaidi takes charge as 20th chief election commissioner
i) Conducting free and fair elections “at all costs” will be the aim of the election commission, Nasim Zaidi, who took charge as the 20th chief election commissioner (CEC) on Sunday, said.
ii) Zaidi’s tenure will end in July 2017, when he attains the age of 65.

9) Neeraj Kumar appointed BCCI’s ACSU chief

Former Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar was, on Monday, appointed as chief advisor of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Anti Corruption & Security Unit (ACSU) for a term of one year.
ii) The decision to appoint Mr. Kumar was taken at the Governing Council Meeting of the Indian Premier League, which was chaired by chairman Rajeev Shukla.
