Daily GK Update 9 April 2015 Current Affairs

1) The RBI (Reserve Bank of India) notified hike in FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) limit in Insurance Sector to 49 percent from the present 26 percent. As per the notification, FDI up to 26 percent will be under automatic route and beyond 26 percent and up to 49 percent will be allowed with the approval of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

2) President of India, Pranab Mukherjee appointed Dr. Nasim Zaidi as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). He will assume the charge of office of the CEC with effect from 19 April 2015.

3) Sumit Mazumder was elected as the President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the year 2015-16. He succeeded Ajay Shriram.

4) Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang retired. Xiang, the first man from China to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field, announced his retirement due to injury.

5) Richie Benaud, the former Australian cricket captain and legendary commentator died in Sydney on 10 April 2015. He died after fighting a long battle with skin cancer. He was 84.

6) China plans to build a 540-kilometre strategic high-speed rail link between Tibet and Nepal passing through a tunnel under Mt Everest, a move that could raise alarm in India about the Communist giant’s growing influence in its neighbourhood.

7) Karnataka Bank has promoted Chandrashekar Rao B, Deputy General Manager, as General Manager. A press release by the bank said here on Thursday that Rao started his career as a manager in the bank in 1995. Upon his elevation to the cadre of Chief Manager in 2005, he headed the bank’s Bengaluru Overseas Branch. He was elevated to the position of Assistant General Manager in May 2008, and as Deputy General Manager in March 2012, it added.

8) Ace Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal’s stay at the top of the table was cut short as she dropped a place to be World No. 2 in the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on 9th Apirl 2015.
