1.  India launched Operation Maitri in quake-hit Nepal
i) The Indian military has mounted a massive relief operation in quake-hit Nepal, using its fleet of transport aircraft to rush in rescue teams and relief materials and ferry back stranded Indians.
ii) The operation was launched shortly after the 7.9-magnitude quake hit Nepal at 11.56 am on Saturday, and the first military plane carrying relief materials and Indian experts landed in Kathmandu before 6pm.
iii) The quick response again highlighted India’s emergence as a country capable of a rapid response to natural disasters and emergencies in the region, an offshoot of its drive to ramp up the strategic lift capabilities of its air force and navy.

2. Sangeeta Bhatia, Indian-origin scientist at MIT, won the 2015 Heinz Award
i) An Indian-origin scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has developed artificial human microlivers for drug testing, has won a prestigious 250,000 dollars Heinz award for her work in tissue engineering and disease detection.
ii) Sangeeta Bhatia at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been named the recipient of the 2015 Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment.
iii) The award includes an unrestricted prize of 250,000 dollars.

3. Indian-origin diplomat Gopinath Pillai awarded for his services in Singapore

i) Indian-origin diplomat Gopinath Pillai has been bestowed with 'Outstanding Service Award' for his services to the city-state by the National University of Singapore (NUS) .
ii) 78-year-old Gopinath Pillai, who is currently the Ambassador-at-Large of Singapore and special envoy to Andhra Pradesh recieved the award.
iii) Pillai has contributed significantly to Singapore through his distinguished service as a diplomat for more than 25 years.

4. Bharatiya Mahila Bank wins The Asian Banker Achievement Award 2015
i) B
haratiya Mahila Bank Ltd has won The Asian Banker Achievement Award 2015 for Technology Implementation in the category of Best Outsourcing Project (New Bank).
ii) The award was received by Smt. Usha Ananthasubramanian, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharatiya Mahila Bank Ltd. at a function held recently in Hongkong as a part of The Asian Banker Summit 2015.

5. BCCI to nominate Rohit Sharma for Arjuna award
i) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has nominated Rohit Sharma for the Arjuna award for 2015. Rohit has had an excellent last year for India in international cricket.
ii) Since January 1, 2014, he has averaged 55.05 from 21 innings with 3 centuries and 5 fifties, with the epic 264 his highest score.
iii) The decision to nominate Rohit was taken in the BCCI working committee meeting in Kolkata. 

6. Nepal earthquake: Death toll rises above 3,600
i) Rescue workers today intensified efforts to locate survivors trapped under tonnes of rubble of flattened homes and buildings in earthquake-hit Nepal amid concerns that death toll could rise from more than 3,600 with rescue teams reaching remote mountainous areas.
ii) Nepalese police today said the death toll had risen to 3,617 people. That does not include the 22 people killed in the avalanche on Mount Everest.
iii) Nepalese Home ministry’s national disaster management division said more than 6,830 people were injured.
