Daily GK Updates - 26th May 2015 Important Current Affairs

1.  Manoj Mishra appointed as CMD of National Fertilizers Ltd
i.  Union Government has appointed Manoj Mishra as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of state-run National Fertilizers Ltd (NFL).
ii. i. Mishra, currently posted as Director Finance at State Trading Corporation (STC), is likely to assume the charge of CMD of the fertiliser firm this week.
iii. In September last year, government headhunters Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) had recommended Mishra's name for the top post at NFL. NFL's CMD post fell vacant after the retirement of Neeru Abrol in February 2014.

2.  Union Government approves 21 FDI proposals worth Rs 281 crore
Union Government has approved twenty one proposals of Foreign Direct Investment (DI) amounting to over 280 crore rupees.
ii. These FDI proposals were based on recommendations of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).
Some of approved FDI proposals are:
•    La Renon Healthcare’s proposal to invest 100 crore rupees in a brownfield project.
•    Blue Dart Express’s proposal to acquire shares in Blue Dart Aviation Ltd and hike shareholding from 49 percent to 74 percent.
•    Quickjet Cargo Airlines proposal to increase foreign shareholding in the company to 74 percent from 62.34 percent. The deal will entail FDI worth 14.40 crore rupees.
•    Forever Living Imports (India) Pvt Ltd’s 18.30 crore rupees proposal to undertake single brand retailing of Forever brand products in India.
•    Farnair Switzerland A.G's proposal for the purchase of shares of Quickjet Cargo Airlines Pvt Ltd from its existing shareholder and subscribe to fresh shares.
•    Thornton Tomasetti Inc's proposal to set up a LLP to carry out the activities of engineering, design, investigation and analysis services to customers worldwide.
•    Vivimed Labs Limited's proposal seeking approval for issuance of warrants to a foreign investor.
•    IPG advertising and business services Pvt Ltd's proposal for its conversion into a Limited Liability partnership firm.

3.  2,000-year-old water-supply system unearthed in Israel

i. An ancient aqueduct built more than 2,000 years ago to transport water into the city of Jerusalem has been unearthed.
ii. According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, a section of Jerusalem's lower aqueduct, which conveyed water to the city more than 2,000 years ago, was exposed in the Umm Tuba quarter (near Har Homa) during the construction of a sewer line.
iii. The authority conducted an archaeological excavation there following the discovery of the aqueduct.
Key facts
a) Constructed during the rule of kings in the Hasmonean dynasty (140 B.C. to 37 B.C).
 b) It was one of Jerusalem’s principal sources of water.
c) It is 21 km long with starting point located at the En ‘Eitam spring, near Solomon’s Pools, south of Bethlehem.
d) Water through it flowed down a gentle slope to Jerusalem, passing through the Israel’s modern-day cities of Umm Tuba, Sur Bahar, East Talpiot and Abu Tor.
e) During the Ottoman period, around 500 years ago a terra cotta pipe was installed inside the channel in order to protect the water.
f) Apart from this, other sections of the extensive aqueduct were unearthed in the past in Armon Ha-Natziv tunnels located in the City of David.
g) Around the Sultan’s Pool along the west side of Mount Zion in Jerusalem. On the Sherover promenade in southern Jerusalem.

4. Lt General (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma sworn-in as Governor of Mizoram

i. Lt General (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma has sworn-in as the 17th governor of Mizoram.
ii. Justice T Vaiphei, judge of the Gauhati High Court administered him the oath of office as per provisions of Article 159 of Indian Constitution.
iii. Mr. Sharma will succeed West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi who was given additional charge of Mizoram in April 2015.
iv. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as governor of Arunachal Pradesh. He was transferred to Mizoram by President Pranab Mukherjee on May 12, 2015.

5.  PM Modi launches 'Kisan TV' for farmers
i. Marking the first anniversary of NDA government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched ‘Kisan TV’ at a function held in Vigyan Bhawan.
ii. In his address, PM stressed on the need for improving farmers’ condition in the country. He said if country wants to progress, the elevation of villages and farmers is the stepping stone.
iii. After coming to power, the NDA government had announced that it will launch a 24—hour TV channel for farmers.
iv. In his Union Budget 2014 speech, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who now also holds the charge of the I&B ministry, had announced that a 24—hour TV channel will be dedicated to the agriculture sector, for which he had marked an outlay of Rs. 100 crore.

6. Kumar Sangakkara named CEAT International Cricketer of the Year 2015
i. Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara was named as the International Cricketer of the Year 2015 while the middle order batsman Ajinkya Rahane was named as the CEAT Indian Cricketer of the Year 2015.
ii. Former Indian captain Kapil Dev was conferred with the International Lifetime Achievement Award at the 19th edition of the awards.
