1. India becomes most attractive investment destination: BPI 2015
i. India has become most attractive investment destination in world after it was ranked first among 110 countries in a ranking of destinations for attractiveness to foreign investors.
ii. The ranking was based on baseline profitability index (BPI) 2015. In this edition of China was placed at the 65th position and US was placed at the 50th.
iii. India has emerged as top investment destination in BPI 2015 compared to previous 6th position held in the 2014 index. It should be noted that high ranking in this index indicates high returns and improving economic institutions.
iv. India was able to top in this edition of BPI because of high growth forecasts, perceptions of corruption down and investor friendly polices of Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
2. Andhra Pradesh government to form Krishi Cabinet
i. Andhra Pradesh government has decided to form a Cabinet sub-committee named as Krishi Cabinet.
ii. This sub-committee will focus on the challenges of the Primary Sector Mission of state government undertaken to make agriculture and its allied activities profitable and sustainable for all-round improvement of the rural economy.
iii. Decision in this regard was taken by state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Vijaywada.
iv. Apart from this cabinet also rechristened Primary Sector Mission of state as ‘Rythu Kosam’. This mission will be part of the government’s strategy to achieve 18.2 per cent growth in 2015-16 fiscal.
v. It will aim to enhance the contribution of primary sector to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) from 1.43 lakh crore to 1.69 lakh crore rupees. Additional Joint Collector-rank official will the in-charge of the Primary Sector Mission’s performance.
3. Satnam Singh Bhamara becomes first Indian to be drafted by a NBA team
i. Satnam Singh Bhamara became the first Indian born basketball player to be drafted in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
ii. He was chosen by the Dallas Mavericks team as the 52nd pick in the NBA Draft. He was selected amongst the 60 young men who will play in the next season of NBA.
4. PM calls for 2nd Green Revolution without any delay
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for second Green Revolution, saying it should start immediately from eastern India.
ii. He said Indian agriculture has been lagging in several areas, including inputs, irrigation, value-addition and market linkages, and his government is committed to modernising the sector and making it more productive.
iii. “We have seen the first Green Revoltuion but it happened several years ago. Now it is the demand of time that there should be second Green Revolution without any delay. And where is it possible? It is possible in eastern UP, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam, Odhisa,” Modi said, while laying the foundation stone of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Barhi.
iv. “That is why the government is focusing on the development of this area. For that we have started this research institute,” the Prime Minister said.
v. He said urea plants in this area have been closed and a decision has been taken to reopen them as farmers will need fertilisers.
5. Jayalalithaa to flag off Chennai Metro on Monday
i. The much awaited Chennai Metro rail passenger service will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday, according to government sources.
ii. She will inaugurate the first phase of the ₹14,000-crore project from Alandur to Koyambedu via video conference from the State Secretariat, sources said.
iii. The 10.1-km elevated stretch has five stations in between, and will take less than 20 minutes to travel with the train stopping for 30 seconds in each station.
iv. The line will be extended to the Chennai airport from Alandur in the next stage.
v. Alstom has manufactured the air-conditioned coaches — first at its facility in Brazil and later at Sri City at Tada in Andhra Pradesh. Each train will have a capacity to carry 1,276 ýpassengers with a seating capacity for 276 and standing 1,000.
6. Canada Open: Jwala-Ashwini pair enters finals
i. Commonwealth Games silver-medallist duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa entered the women’s doubles final of the Canada Open badminton tournament after posting a straight-game victory over Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto.
ii. The third-seeded Indian combo outplayed the Japanese pair of 21-17 21-16 in their semi-final match that lasted just half-an-hour. The bronze medal winners of the 2011 World Championship, Jwala and Ashwini will clash with the top seeded Dutch pair of Selena Piek and Eefje Muskens in the final.
iii. It was an easy match for Jwala and Ashwini, who hardly broke a sweat against their Japanese opponents.In the first game, the Indians trailed in the beginning but once they caught up with their rivals at 4-4, there was no looking back for them.
iv. From tied 6-6, Jwala and Ashwini surged ahead to a 9-6 lead. Although the Japanese girls came from behind to hold them at 14-14, the Indian pair earned four points on the trot to move to 18-14 and eventually sealed off the opening game.
v. World No. 13 Indian combination broke away early from tied 2-2 in the second game and simply went on extending the lead to finally wrap it up rather comfortably.
