Daily GK Update - 29th June 2015 Important Current Affairs

1. Russia’s former PM Yevgeny Primakov passes away
i. Former Prime minister Yevgeny Primakov passed away in Moscow after a prolonged illness. He was 85. He had served as PM for just eight months between September 1998 and May 1999.
ii. During his long political career, he also had served as Foreign Minister (1996 to 1998), Speaker of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (in 1989) and chief of the intelligence service.
iii. Prior to Gulf war, he had played a prominent role in negotiations with former dictator of Iraq Saddam Hussein. Primakov was born in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev in 1929 in erstwhile Soviet Union.
iv. He had studied Arabic at the Moscow Institute for Oriental Studies. Prior joining politics, he had worked as a journalist for Soviet radio and for Pravda newspaper as a Middle Eastern correspondent.

2. Jwala Gutta, Ashwni Ponappa win women’s doubles title of Canada Open Badminton tournament
i. Indian pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwni Ponappa won the women’s doubles title of the Canada Open Badminton tournament.
ii. In the finals match played at Calgary, Canada they defeated Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in straight games of 21-19, 21-16. It is their first title of this season.
iii. Men’s Single title: Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia won the men’s single title, by defeating Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong by 17-21 13-21 score in the final match.
iv. Women’s Single title: Michelle Li of Canada won the women’s single title, by defeating Kaori Imabeppu of Japan by 21-17 25-23 score in the final match.
v. Mixed doubles title: It was won by Chinese pair Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen. In the final match, they defeated Chinese pair Kaixiang Huang and Sijie Wang by 17-21 21-12 21-18 score.

3. V K Dikshit elected president of Kassia
i. V K Dikshit, Managing Director, Karnataka CNC Tech, has been elected as President of The Karnataka Small Scale Industries Association (Kassia) at its 65th Annual General Body Meeting for the year 2015-16 and A Padmanabha has been elected as Vice-President.
ii. Following are the office-bearers: K B Arasappa, general secretary; C S Kattishetti, Joint Secretary-I; M G Rajagopal, Joint Secretary-II; and Boregowda, Treasurer.

4. Chennai Metro Rail begins operations
i. The much awaited Chennai Metro rail passenger service commenced operations this morning.
ii. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa inaugurated the first phase of the 14,000-crore project from Alandur to Koyambedu via video conference from the State Secretariat just after 12 noon.
The 10.1-km elevated stretch has five stations in between, and will take less than 20 minutes to travel, with the train stopping for 30 seconds in each station.

5. Rahane to lead squad for Zimbabwe tour, many seniors rested
i. Ajinkya Rahane will lead a 15-man India squad for the Zimbabwe tour. Many senior players have been rested for the tour.
ii. Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh staged a comeback to the ODI squad after a gap of four years as a second-string team was today named for next month’s tour of Zimbabwe.
iii. Batsman Robin Uthappa also made a return to the ODI side, while paceman Sandeep Sharma and leg-spinner Karn Sharma were included in the team to be captained by Rahane.
iv. Opener Murali Vijay, Ambati Rayudu and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were among the senior players picked in the squad announced by BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur after the selection committee meeting.

6. Another Accused in Vyapam Scam Dies, 23 Others Have Died So Far
i. Narendra Singh Tomar, another accused in the high-profile Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board or MPPEB scam died under mysterious circumstances.
ii. 23 other persons  linked to the scam, also known as Vyapam scam, have died under mysterious circumstances so far.
iii. Dr Tomar was lodged at a jail in Indore since February after he was arrested for allegedly bringing imposters from Uttar Pradesh to answer pre medical tests in 2009 in place of the actual candidates. On Saturday night, he complained of chest pain and was taken to the Maharaja Yashwant Rao Hospital in Indore where doctors declared him brought dead.
iv. “He complained of chest pain so we rushed him to the hospital. How he died, we do not know,” constable Dinesh Yadav of the district’s jail said.Dr Tomar’s family fears foul play in his death. “The police tell me that my brother complained of chest pain and so they brought him here. When we reached here in the morning we were told he is dead,” said his brother Vikram Singh.
v. A magisterial probe has been ordered to find the cause of Dr Tomar’s death. But the Opposition Congress, which has been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, is far from satisfied. The Congress has been alleging the involvement of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his family in the scam and see the deaths as a cover up. “Shivraj Singh Chouhan is trying to cover up. PM should speak about it; he does not speak what nation wants to hear,” said Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh.
