Daily GK Updates - 6th June 2015 Important Current Affairs

1. Prominent scientist Ameenah Gurib-Fakim sworn-in as President of Mauritius
i. Prominent scientist Ameenah Gurib-Fakim was on 5 June 2015 sworn in as President of Mauritius.
ii. With this, Gurib-Fakim became the first female president of Mauritius, which gained independence from Britain in 1968 and replaced Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state in 1992.
iii. Ameenah, an internationally-renowned scientist and biologist, succeeded Kailash Purryag who stepped down from his post on 29 May 2015.
iv. At the time of her appointment as President, Gurib-Fakim was director of Centre for Phytotherapy Research (CEPHYR) in Mauritius, which carries out research on plants for use in cosmetics, nutrition and therapy.
v. Earlier, the Parliament on 4 June 2015 cleared her name for the ceremonial position of the Indian island nation after she was designated for the post by Government of Mauritius.
vi. An alumni of the universities of Exeter and Surrey in Britain, she also serves as the chairman of organic chemistry at Mauritius University. She has also worked with the World Bank and other international institutions as well.

2. Wrestler Prem Nath passed away

i. Wrestler Prem Nath, a gold medallist at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games, passed away on 1 June 2015. He was 64. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
ii. Prem Nath, a President’s Medal-winning retired Delhi Police official, was known for his efforts to popularise wrestling in Delhi.
iii. In 1976, he took over an akhara established by Guru Baijnath in the Kamla Nagar area of New Delhi. Today, the akhara is known as the Guru Prem Nath akhara.

3. R Seshasayee appointed as Non-Executive Chairman of Infosys Limited
i. Infosys on Friday said its board has appointed R Seshasayee as the IT giant's non-executive chairman with immediate effect.
ii. KV Kamath is stepping down from his position as chairman and independent director of Infosys, consequent to his nomination as president of the BRICS New Development Bank.
iii. Mr Seshasayee has been an independent director with Infosys since 2011 and is the chairperson of the company's audit committee. Mr Seshasayee's other board positions include non-executive vice chairman of Ashok Leyland and chairman of IndusInd Bank.
iv. A chartered accountant by profession, the 67-year old Mr Seshasayee started his career with Hindustan Lever Limited in 1971. He joined Ashok Leyland Ltd. in 1976 and was appointed as executive director in 1983, deputy managing director in 1993 and elevated as managing director in April 1998.

4. Maharashtra bans sale of Maggi noodles
i. Maharashtra Food and Drug Minister Girish Bapat has announced a ban on the sale of Maggi with effect from today after lab tests proved presence of lead above the permissible level in the samples tested.
ii. Out of six samples tested in a city lab last night, three contained lead more that the permissible level, Bapat said late last night, adding, those who violated the ban would be subjected to “strict action” by food and drug authorities.
iii. The three samples singled out contained 4.66 PPM as against 2.5 PPM which is a permissible level.
iv. However, the company also maintained that its noodles are safe for human consumption.

5. Chandrababu Naidu performs bhoomi pooja for new capital city of Amaravati
i.  The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, today performed the Bhoomi Pooja for the new capital city at Tallayapalem in Guntur district about 280 km from here.
ii. The auspicious event, where a symbolic stone (Boduraayi) was laid, was performed by priests in the presence of Cabinet colleagues and special invitees at 8.49 am.
iii. Tallayapalem is located on the banks of river Krishna, about 15 km from Vijayawada.
iv. The State Government is in the process of pooling 34,000 acres of land for the capital city spread over 29 revenue villages.

6. Reliance Power to set up $3 billion gas-based plant in Bangladesh
i. Reliance Power said on Saturday that it will set up a 2 million tonnes per annum floating natural gas (LNG) import terminal and a 3,000 megawatt power plant in Bangladesh.
ii. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed by Reliance Power "during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Dhaka", on his two-day official tour to the country, the company said in a stock exchange filing here.
iii. Reliance Power will use the equipment it had contracted for its Samalkot project in Andhra Pradesh for setting up the power plant in Bangladesh in three years from the date of signing the power purchase agreement (PPA).

7. Kotak Mahindra, ING Bank ink MoU for cross-border business
i. Kotak Mahindra Bank and ING Bank have joined hands for exploring opportunities arising from cross-border business, investment and trade flows across various regions, including Europe.
ii. A memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed between the two, covers an array of co-operation in areas such as trade finance, remittances and services related to non-resident Indians, funding to counterparties' corporate relationships, fee-based products, direct banking and digital strategy, and cross-border debt capital markets and mergers and acquisitions.

8. Profligate Kashyap ousted from Indonesian Open
i. Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap squandered a dominating position to crash out of the Indonesian Open Super Series with a loss to eighth-seeded Japanese Momota Kento in the semifinal.
ii. The Indian, who defeated world number one Chen Long in Friday's quarterfinal, lost 21—12 17—21 19—21 in a draining battle which lasted an hour and 11 minutes.
iii. Kashyap and Kento were facing off after a gap of two years and the Japanese had emerged triumphant in their previous encounter as well.
