1. Vijai Sharma appointed as new Chief Information Commissioner
i. President Pranab Mukherjee has appointed Vijai Sharma as Chief Information Commissioner. He will have tenure of for 5 years or till they attain the age of 65, whichever is earlier. Vijai Sharma is a 1974 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh Cadre.
ii. Prior to this appointment he was serving as information commissioner in Central Information Commission since 2012. He has rich work experience in Administration & Governance and Law & Policy in Central and State Governments and United Nations. He also had served as Environment secretary.
iii. Background Vijai Sharma’s name for Chief Information Commissioner was finalized on June 1, 2015 by selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprising Union minister Arun Jaitley as well as Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge.

2. 16th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA)
i. 16th edition of the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) informally known as the “Bollywood Oscars,” was held in Malaysia.
ii. The award ceremony was held in Putra Indoor Stadium Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 2015 IIFA Awards honoured the best films of 2014 and the ceremony took place from June 05 to 07, 2015.
iii. Haider was awarded the most awards (09).

3.  Telugu writer Dasaradhi Rangacharya died at 87
Legendary Telugu writer Dasaradhi Rangacharya died in Hyderabad on 8 June 2015, after a brief illness. He was 87.
B Rangacharya, born on 24 August 1928 in a village in Khammam district, now in Telangana, took part in the armed struggle against the erstwhile Nizam ruler.
iii. Inspired by Marxism and socialism, Rangacharya wrote several books that highlighted the life and agony of the people at the grass roots level especially in the then Telangana region. His novels Moduga Poolu (Fire flowers), Chillara Devullu (The Lesser Deities) and Janapadam are well known for their inspiring role in influencing Telugu people against oppression by the rulers.
iv. He received Central Sahitya Academy award for Chillara Devullu written in 1969. He translated all four Vedas into Telugu besides Ramayana and Mahabharata. He also wrote Jeevanayanam as his autobiography.

4. Delhi Law Minister arrested in fake degree case
i. Delhi Law Minister and AAP leader Jitender Singh Tomar was arrested on the charges of forging mark sheets to get jobs. Tomar, against whom investigation was pending over the allegations of forgery, is under the custody of Police at present. He will be brought before the court soon.
ii. Tomar said he was arrested by a team of 40 cops without even a warrant. He said the officials did not give any details of the case.
iii. AAP strongly protested the arrest terming it as a vendetta politics by the BJP against the AAP Government. Party leader Sanjay Singh confirmed the arrest and said Tomar is kept in Hauz Khaz police station.
iv. He said Tomar was arrested without a notice. "If the matter is of a degree certificate, why the Delhi Police is not taking (Union Ministers) Smriti Irani and Ram Shankar Katheria without a notice?" Singh asked.
v. The Police and the BJP have not responded to the development.

5. Yoga Day celebrations at UN to be broadcast at Times Square
i. The celebrations commemorating the first International Day of Yoga here, to be presided over by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, will be broadcast at Times Square to a global audience.
ii. The UN will commemorate the inaugural International Yoga Day on June 21 with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and General Assembly President Sam Kutesa gracing the occasion.
iii. The India-led celebrations will also feature a special lecture and demonstration by Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
iv. The celebrations at the world body’s headquarters would be broadcast to an audience of thousands at Times Square, considered the global crossroads in the heart of Manhattan.
v. Another celebration of the Solstice Day would be observed at Times Square on June 21 with thousands performing yoga exercises, according to the Indian mission to the UN here.

6. ISRO bags Space Pioneer Award for its Mars mission
i. The country’s low-cost Mars mission which is in rendezvous with the red Planet for an extended period has been presented with the Space Pioneer award for the year 2015 by the US’ National Space Society.
ii. Space Pioneer award for the year 2015 was presented to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in the Science and Engineering category during the 34th Annual International Space Development Conference held at Toronto in Canada during May 20-24, 2015, city-headquartered ISRO said on its website.
iii. It said the National Space Society (NSS) of USA presented the award in recognition of ISRO’s efforts in accomplishing Mars Mission in its very first attempt.
iv. The Space Pioneer Award consists of a silvery pewter Moon globe cast by the Baker Art Foundry in Placerville, California, from a sculpture originally created by Don Davis, the well-known space and astronomical artist, ISRO said.

7. Delhi govt sends back Lt. Governor-appointed ACB chief
i. Delhi Lieutinent Governor Najeeb Jung had cleared the appointment of Mukesh Kumar Meena, an IPS officer of the 1989 batch currently in-charge of the New Delhi Range.
ii. The Delhi Government has asked a Joint Commissioner of Police posted as the head of its Anti-Corruption Branch against its wishes to “go back.”
iii. Sukesh Kumar Jain, Secretary and Director (Vigilance) from the Directorate of Vigilance wrote to Mukesh Kumar Meena  — minutes after he had officially assumed charge as chief of the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB).
iv. In his letter, Mr. Jain said: “The post of Additional Commissioner of police of the ACB is presently occupied.
