Daily GK Update 11th July 2015 Important Current Affairs

1. India accorded full membership of SCO at Ufa summit 2015
i. India has been accorded full accorded the full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) at its Ufa summit held in Russia. 
ii. Technically, India will become the member of SCO by 2016 after completion of certain procedures. This membership will help India to work with the 6 members grouping to enhance connectivity, combat terror and create an environment for boosting trade by easing barriers.
iii. SCO is a Eurasian economic, political and military organization
iv. SCO’s first enlargement was in 2001 with addition of Uzbekistan and second enlargement was in July 2015 with addition of 2 new members India and Pakistan.

 2.  Isro's PSLV rocket powers five British satellites into orbit

i. India ferried five British satellites into orbit on its space warhorse PSLV-C28 that blasted off from Isro’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Srikarihota in Andhra Pradesh on Friday night.
ii. The rocket blasted off sharp at 9:58pm from the first launch pad with five satellites together weighing around 1,440kg, marking the space agency's heaviest commercial mission so far.
iii. The five international satellites were launched as part of the arrangement entered into between DMC International Imaging (DMCii), a wholly owned subsidiary of SSTL, UK and Antrix Corporation Limited.
iv. These satellites can image any target on the Earth's surface every day. Major application areas include surveying the resources on earth and its environment, managing urban infrastructure and monitoring disasters.
v. The last such major launch by Isro was on June 30, 2014 when France's SPOT 7 satellite weighing 714kg was carried by a PSLV rocket.

3. Typhoon Linfa hits Southern Chinese province of Guangdong
i. The powerful Typhoon Linfa has hit the southern China after it made landfall on southern province of Guangdong. Typhoon Linfa has hit the southern province by bringing winds of up to 126 km/hr along with heavy rain.
ii.  However after it had made landfall, the typhoon has lost strength rapidly after it passed near Hong Kong due to weakened low pressure area. Typhoon Linfa is the first of two large storms Chan-Hom and Nangka which are going to hit China.
iii. The third storm, Nangka is the most powerful among them and has reached supertyphoon strength with winds of 250 km/hr. But it has strong presence far out in the Pacific Ocean and not expected to hit any land with high strength.

4. Prince Saud al-Faisal, World’s longest serving Foreign Minister passes away

i. Prince Saud al-Faisal, former foreign minister of Saudi Arabia passed away in United States. He was 75. He was the Saudi kingdom’s foreign minister for 4 decades (from 1975 to 2015). 
ii. He had retired in April 2015 and was succeeded by Adel al-Jubeir.
iii.  He had served under four Saudi kings and had advanced the kingdom’s foreign policy, especially after the 9/11 attacks in US. It should be noted that he was world’s longest-serving foreign minister

5. On World Population Day, Indians number 1,274,234,538
i. On World Population Day, Indians numbered 1,274,234,538 at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, constituting an estimated 17.23 percent of the overall global inhabitation of humans, as per data available with an independent socio-economic statistical organisation.
ii. According to Indiastat.com, which compiled secondary level socio-economic statistical information on India based on official figures, the numbers were based on data from the National Commission on Population and the US Census Bureau.
iii. India has been forecast to overtake China as the most populous country by 2028, as per official estimates. But the government also says that population growth rate of the country has declined significantly from 21.54 percent for the decade of 1991-2000 to 17.64 percent during 2001-11.

6. Indigenously developed surface-to-air Akash Missile inducted in IAF
i. Indigenously developed supersonic surface-to-air Akash Missile has been inducted in Indian Air Force (IAF).
ii. The Akash missile was inducted by Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar at a function held at Maharajpur Airbase in Gwalior after he handed over the symbolic key of Akash defence system (ADS) to Air chief Marshal Arup Raha.
iii. It should be noted that Akash missile already has been included in Indian Army. It was inducted in Army in May 2015.

7. Record-breaking Rabada helps Proteas crush Bangladesh

i. Kagiso Rabada became only the second man in history to claim a hat trick on debut as South Africa thrashed Bangladesh by eight wickets in a rain-hit first one-day international in Dhaka on Friday.
ii. Rabada finished with 6-16, the best ever one-day haul by a debutante, as Bangladesh were folded 160 in 36.3 overs after the hosts opted to bat first on a rain-soaked pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
iii. Rabada, selected ahead of experienced Morne Morkel, struck in the third ball of his second over when he sent the off-stump of opener Tamim Iqbal cartwheeling.

8. Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA) launched by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
i. Former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam launched the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA) in New Delhi. The abhiyan aims to inculcate a spirit of inquiry, creativity and love for Science and Mathematics in school children.
ii. Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan is a concept developed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
iii. Under Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan, government schools will be mentored by Institutes like IITs/IIMs/IISERs and other Central Universities and reputed organisations through innovative programmes, student exchanges, demonstrations, student visits, etc to develop a natural sense of passion towards learning of Science and Maths.

9. Modi congratulates ISRO for successful PSLV-C28 launch

i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today congratulated the Indian Space Research Organisation scientists for the successful launch of PSLV-C28 saying it was a moment of “immense pride and joy for India”.
ii. “Successful launch of PSLV-C28 with 5 UK satellites is a moment of immense pride and joy for India. Congratulations for the @isro team,” Modi said on twitter.
iii. ISRO successfully launched five British commercial satellites on board PSLV-C28 from the spaceport of Sriharikota in one of heaviest commercial mission ever undertaken by it.
iv. ISRO’s trusted workhorse PSLV-C28 placed the five satellites in sun synchronous orbit about 20 minutes after lift-off at 9.58 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

10. Former TN minister Chendur Pandian passes away

i. Former Tamil Nadu Minister and AIADMK MLA P Chendur Pandian died here today following a prolonged illness, the party said.
ii. Pandian (64), representing the Kadayanallur Assembly constituency, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital here and breathed his last this morning, it said.
iii. Pandian was the minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments till he was admitted to hospital early this year, when it was handed over to his Cabinet colleague R Kamaraj. He was a minister without portfolio since then.
iv. He was elected to the Assembly from Kadayanallur in Tirunelveli district in 2011 following which he was inducted as the minister for Khadi and Village Industries. He held that post till February 2013.

11. Serena holds off battling Muguruza to win Wimbledon

i. Serena Williams claimed a sixth Wimbledon title and fourth successive grand slam crown by suppressing the spirited attacking instincts of 20th-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza to win Saturday's final 6-4 6-4.
ii. American Williams reinforced her stranglehold on the women's game by overcoming an early wobble and resisting a battling fightback to claim a 21st grand slam title that leaves her one behind German Steffi Graf's record haul of professional era majors.
iii. The world number one was simply too powerful and too consistent for surprise 21-year-old finalist Muguruza, who began with a valiant positive approach but could not maintain her early high level.
iv. After losing a close first set and battling bravely to come back from 5-1 down in the second, the Spaniard was eventually downed after one hour and 23 minutes of combat, to leave Williams to receive the acclaim of the Centre Court crowd.
v. Williams now holds all four majors at the same time -- the so-called 'Serena Slam' -- having also won the U.S., Australian and French Open titles
