1. India celebrates 67th Republic Day
i. India celebrated 67th Republic day 26th January 2016 by displaying its cultural diversity, economic progress and military might were on display at Rajpath, New Delhi.
ii. In the national Capital, President Pranab Mukherjee unfurled the national flag and took salute of the parade at Rajpath. French President Francois Hollande was chief guest of Republic Day function. With this he beamce 5th highest dignitary from France to be Chief Guest of Indian Republic Day parade.
iii. The Parade was led by Lieutenant General Rajan Ravindran. In the parade, women empowerment was seen as women contingent of CRPF participated in the parade.
iv. Apart from this, women officer’s contingents of Indian Nay, Air Force and Coast Guard also participated as 2nd in command. For the first time in the history of Republic Day parade foreign contingent participated. It was 76-member contingent 35th Infantry Regiment of the French Army led by Lt Col Paul Bury.
v. During the parade, country’s diverse cultural and social traditions, military prowess and achievements in different fields were showcased.
vi. Indian Army’s missile firing capability, Mobile Autonomous Launcher of the BrahMos Missile System, Infantry Combat Vehicle BMP II Sarath, T-90 Bhishma tank were also displayed. Indian airforce also showed its might with C-17 Globemaster, 5 Jaguar Deep penetration strike aircraft, 3 Sukhoi Su-30, 5 MiG 29 and other fighter choppers during fly.
vii. Army’s dog squad from the Remount Veterinary Corps also took part in the parade after a gap of 26 years. For the first time in the history of parade, the tableau of ex-servicemen of Army veterans was displayed in the parade.
viii. The tableaux from 6 Central Ministries and 17 states and departments also displayed the varied historical, cultural and architectural heritage of the country.
2. American actor Abe Vigoda passes away
i. American actor Abe Vigoda best known for roles in The Godfather and Barney Miller, a sitcom of 1970s passed away in New Jersey, US. He was 94. His most famous role was as the grumpy and deadpan Detective Sergeant Phil Fish in the Barney Miller police comedy series.
ii. He was famous for his role as cop Phil Fish in TV series Barney Miller after he was casted in 1974. This role had brought him greatest recognition.
iii. He was also popular as an actor in films including ‘Look Who’s Talking, Cannonball Run II, Joe Versus the Volcano and North.
3. Actress Rekha conferred 2016 Yash Chopra Memorial Award
i. Veteran Bollywood actress and Rajya Sabha MP Rekha has been conferred with the third edition of Yash Chopra Memorial Award. The award was bestowed upon her by Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao in recognition of her talent and contribution to the film industry.
ii. It is an annual award bestowed upon distinguished senior film personality for outstanding contribution to film industry
iii The award has been instituted by the TSR Foundation of T Subbarami Reddy in the memory of the producer-director Yash Chopra who died in 2012.
iv. It carries Gold Medal and a cash prize of 10 lakh rupees. Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar (2013) and megastar Amitabh Bachchan (2014) have been also conferred with this award.
4. Japanese automaker Toyota tops in global vehicle sales in 2015
i. Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp. has topped in global vehicle sales in 2015 by selling 10.151 million vehicles, beating Volkswagen and General Motors.
ii. With this, the company has retained its status as the world’s top-selling automaker for the fourth straight year. While, German automaker Volkswagen AG is ranks second in global vehicle sales list and has sold 9.93 million vehicles in year 2015.
iii. Detroit-based General Motors (GM) ranks third in the list and has sold at 9.8 million vehicles. In 2008, Toyota had broken GM’s 7 decades of long reign as the world’s top automaker.
iv. But it had lost it in 2011 as Japan’s devastating earthquake-tsunami disaster that had dented its production and disrupted the supply chains. However, in 2012 Toyota once again overtook GM and since then it has remained on top position.
5. Kerala dentist Sajeev Koshy honoured with Order of Australia
i. A Kerala dentist Sajeev Koshy settled in Melbourne on 26 January 2016 was honoured with the highest civilian honour, the Order of Australia.
ii. Koshy was given the award for his service to dentistry in Victoria, Australia. He was honoured on the Australia Day Awards 2016, by the Governor General of Australia.
6. Ashok Chakra awarded posthumously to Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami
i. President Pranab Mukherjee, on 26 January 2016, awarded India’s highest peacetime gallantry award Ashoka Chakra, posthumously to Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami of 9 Para (Special Forces) of the Rashtriya Rifles.
7. West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul retired from international cricket
i. The West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul announced his retirement from international cricket almost 22 years after making his debut.
ii. Chanderpaul had not played for West Indies since May 2015. The West Indies selectors dropped him after a weak performance during the three-Test series at home against England.
iii. Shivnarine Chanderpaul is the first Indo-Caribbean to play 100 Tests for the West Indies.
iv. He has scored 20000 runs in international cricket.
v. His highest score in Tests was 203 not out and he finished with an average of 51.37, and he also posted a top score of 150 in ODIs, finishing with an average of 41.60.
8. ICC released Test, ODI, and T20I Rankings
i. The International Cricket Council (ICC) on launched the official ICC men’s Team Rankings from Test, One Day International (ODI) and T20I cricket.
ii. India returned to the summit of the Test rankings for the first time since August 2011. India is the new leader with 110 rating points followed by Australia and the South Africa.
iii. India had moved to the second of the Test rankings in December 2015 when they defeated South Africa 3-0 on home soil.
9. FIH Hockey Stars Awards 2015 announced
i. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on announced the winners of its Hockey Stars awards for 2015.
ii. The Netherlands' Robert Van der Horst and Lidewij Weltenwon the men's and women's FIH Player of the Year awards, respectively, for their performances in 2015.
10. Marvin Minsky, the pioneer of Artificial Intelligence, died
i. Marvin Minsky, the pioneer of artificial intelligence, died on 24 January 2016 at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital due to cerebral hemorrhage. The mathematician and the computer scientist died at the age of 88.
ii. Minsky, a professor emeritus at the MIT Media Lab, helped in work that helped inspired the creation of the personal computer and the Internet.
