Nisid Hajari wins 2016 Colby Award for Best Military Book

1. Nisid Hajari wins 2016 Colby Award for Best Military Book

i. Indian Author and foreign affairs expert has won the prestigious 2016 William E. Colby Award for his book Midnight’s Furies: The Deadly Legacy of India’s Partition.
ii. His book The Midnight’s Furies is based on partition history of India and Pakistan in 1947 and the violence that surrounded it. Nisid Hajari is famous Indian writer who is currently overseeing editorial page of Bloomberg News’ Asia coverage for Bloomberg View.
iii. Before joining Bloomberg, he had worked as a top editor at Newsweek International and Newsweek magazine in New York for 10 years. During this time the magazine had won around 50 awards for its issuers based on international coverage.
iv.  He also had helped to create TIME’s first Asian edition in Hong Kong from 1997 to 2001. He had won 2 General Excellence Awards from the Society of Publishers in Asia.
v. He also had appeared as a commentator on foreign affairs for international news channels like BBC, CNN and National Public Radio. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

2. India, ADB ink $80 Million Loan Agreement to Improve Urban Services in Agartala and Aizwal

i. Union Government and Asian Development Bank (ADB) have signed $80million loan agreement to improve urban services in two North Eastern cities Agartala and Aizwal.
ii. This loan agreement is the third tranche of a $200 million financing facility of ADB under its North Eastern Region Capital cities Development Investment (NERCDI) Program.

3. Nitish Kumar selected for K Veeramani Social Justice Award

i. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been chosen for the prestigious K Veeramani Social Justice Award.

ii. He has been chosen for this award for his immense contribution for the cause of social justice especially for upliftment of weaker and marginalised sections of the society.

4. Puducherry Lt Governor AK Singh launches MITRA app

i. Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Ajay Kumar Singh has launched the MITRA application to ensure protection of women, children and the elderly in time of distress.
ii. MITRA (Mobile Initiated Tracking and Rescue) application has been developed by Puducherry Police department in association with National Informatics Centre (NIC).

5. Morton Mower, Michael Marmot win 2015 Prince Mahidol Award

i. Morton Mower (US), Sir Michael Marmot (UK) have won the prestigious 2015 Prince Mahidol Award for their outstanding achievements in the international healthcare sector.
ii. Thailand’s kiing Bhumibol Adulyadej bestowed the awards on both of them at a ceremony held in Bangkok, Thailand.

6. Dr. Kamlesh Kumar Pandey appointed as Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities

i. Union Government has appointed Dr. Kamlesh Kumar Pandey as the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD) for a period of three years.
ii. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Pandey was associated with NGO Saksham working in the field of disability. He is a Science Graduate from University of Allahabad and Medical Graduate from Agra University in 1990.
iii. He was also associated NGO with Sewa Bharti and there he had worked in rehabilitation of slum dwellers. He was also associated with NGO Akhil Bhartiya Dristihin Kalyan Sangh which is working for visually challenged persons.

7. Leslie Berland appointed as Chief Marketing Officer of Twitter Inc

i. Leslie Berland was appointed as the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Twitter Inc, an online social networking site. Before Berland’s appointment, the marketing operations was overseen by the Twitter’s CFO Anthony Noto.

8. Prince Mahidol Award 2015 conferred in Bangkok

i. Prince Mahidol Award 2015 was conferred upon Professor Morton Mower and Sir Michael Marmot for outstanding achievements in medicine and public health worldwide.
ii. The award was presented at the Grand Palace in Bangkok by the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on behalf of the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej, who couldn’t attend the ceremony due to ill health.

9. Japan unveiled first stealth fighter aircraft X-2

i. Japan on 28 January 2016 unveiled country’s first stealth fighter aircraft X-2. The domestically-built fighter aircraft seeks to augment defence capabilities of the country that is surrounded by China and Russia that already have radar-evading aircraft technology.
ii. X-2 is expected to undergo its first test-flight in February 2016.
