1. Datta Padsalgikar appointed as Mumbai Police Commissioner

i. Senior IPS officer Datta Padsalgikar has been appointed as the Commissioner of Police of Mumbai. He will be 40th Police Commissioner of Mumbai.

ii. He succeeds Ahmed Javed who had retired from service and was appointed as Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia.
iii. He is an IPS Officer of 1982 Batch of Maharashtra cadre. He has vast experience in police service in terror and counter-terror operations.
iv. Prior to this appointment he was on deputation to the Union Government in the Intelligence Bureau (IB). For IB, he had worked in Nagaland, New Delhi and Washington (US).
v. In January 2016, was again repatriated to the state and was serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP).


2. Pietro Fittipaldi wins 2015 MRF Challenge Formula 2000

i. Brazilian racing driver Pietro Fittipaldi has won the 2015 MRF Challenge Formula 2000 by winning two of the four races.
ii. The racing event was held at Madras Motor Racing Track in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The winning race helped him to earn total 244 points to top among the other racers.
iii.
Other results: Tatiana Calderon from Colombia finished 2nd with total 199 points.
iv. Nikita Troitckii from Russia was placed at 3rd position with total 191.
v. 2015 MRF Challenge Formula 2000 Championship: It was the 4th running edition of the MRF Challenge Formula 2000 Championship.
iv. It had started in October 2015 at Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi and the series comprised of total 14 races. This edition of event concluded in January 2016 at the Madras Motor Racing Track.


3. DIPP gives nod to set up India’s first Defence Industrial Park at Ottappalam

i. Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) of Union Government has given its final approval to Kerala Government’s approval to set up India’s first Defence Industrial Park at Ottappalam.
ii. Proposal in this regard was forwarded by Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra), a Kerala government owned Public Sector Company.


4. Kidambi Srikanth wins 2016 Syed Modi Badminton Title in Men’s Singles

i. Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth won the 2016 Syed Modi International Grand prix Gold Championship Title of Badminton in men’s singles category.
ii. In the final match played at Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), he defeated Huang Yuxiang of China by 21-13, 21-14 and 21-14 score.

iii. Women’s single Title Sayaka Sato (Japan) won the 2016 Syed Modi International Grand prix Gold Championship Title in women’s singles category. In the final match, she defeated Sung Ji Hyun (South Korea) by 12-21, 21-18, 21-18 score.
iv. Men’s Doubles Title Malaysian pair of Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong won the 2016 Syed Modi International Grand prix Gold Championship Title in men’s doubles category.
v. They defeated Indian pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Akshay Dewalkar by score of 14-21, 24-22, 21-8.
vi. Women’s Doubles Title South Korean pair of Jung Kyung-eun and Shin Seung-chan won the 2016 Syed Modi International Grand prix Gold Championship Title in women’s doubles category. vii. They defeated Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek from Netherlands by 21-15 and 21-13 score. Mixed Doubles Title Indonesian pair Praveen Jordan and Deby Susanto won the 2016 Syed Modi International Grand prix Gold Championship Title in mixed doubles category. They defeated Thai pair Puavaranukroh Dechapol and Sapisree Tairattanchai by 23-25, 21-09, 21-16 score.


5. 30th Surajkund International Crafts Mela begins at Faridabad

i. The 30th edition of Surajkund International Crafts Mela has begun at Faridabad in Haryana after it was formally inaugurated by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
ii. Telangana is the theme State of this edition of Mela and the two focus countries are China and Japan. Key facts The Mela is organized by the Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism in collaboration with Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture and External Affairs Ministry.
iii. The 15-day festival will be showcasing the richness and diversity of handicrafts, handlooms and cultural heritage of the country.
iv. About 300 artistes from Telangana will also perform different folk arts and shall showcase its unique culture and rich heritage.
v. At least 23 countries are taking part in this edition of Mela and shall host performances by international folk artistes from Japan, Egypt, Congo, Maldives, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.


6. Novak Djokovic wins 2016 Australian Open Men’s Singles Title of Tennis

i. World Number One tennis player Novak Djokovic from Serbia has won the 2016 Australian Open Title in the men’s singles category for.
ii. In the final match played at Melbourne, Australia he defeated Andy Murray of Britain in 7 straight sets by 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 score.
Iii. With this win, Djokovic retained the title and also equalled the record of Roy Emerson’s record of six Australian Open Singles titles. He had earlier won this title in 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. It was overall Djokovic’s 11th grand slam title and equalled the totals of other tennis legends like Rod Laver (Australia) and Bjorn Borg (Sweden).
iv. Murray has succumbed to his fifth loss in five Australian Open finals and he was defeated by Djokovic for the fourth time in Men’s Singles Grand Slam championships.
v. Mixed Doubles Title Elena Vesnina (Russia) and Bruno Soares (Brazil) has won the 2016 Australian Open title in the mixed doubles category. In the final match, they defeated Coco Vandeweghe (US) and Horia Tecău (Romania) pair by 6–4, 4–6, [10–5] score.

7. Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba takes over as new Commanding-in-chief of WNC

i. Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba took over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of Mumbai headquartered Western Naval Command (WNC) at a ceremonial parade held at INS Shikra.
ii. He took the charge from Vice Admiral SPS Cheema who retired after completing nearly four decades of service to the nation and the Indian Navy. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Lanba was Commander-in-chief of the Southern Naval Command at Kochi and head of the premier operational Command of the Indian Navy.


8. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar selected for K Veeramani Award for Social Justice

i. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was selected for the prestigious K Veeramani Award for Social Justice 2015.
ii.
Kumar is chosen for the award for his contribution towards social justice as Chief Minister.
iii. The award is given away by Periyar International, a Chicago-based voluntary organisation. However, the date and venue of the award function are yet to be decided.

9. India won three-match T-20 series against Australia, 3-0

i. India on 31 January 2016 won the three-match T-20 series against Australia, 3-0. In the third and final Twenty20 match played in Sydney, India defeated Australia by seven wickets. ii. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Australia was able to score 197 for 5 in 20 overs after which India surpassed the target of 198 by making 200 for three in their 20 overs.

10. Book titled Nathuram Godse - The Story of an Assassin released

i. .The book titled Nathuram Godse - The Story of an Assassin authored by Anup Ashok Sardesai was released.
ii. The book was released at the government-owned Ravindra Bhavan in Margao, Goa by BJP leader and the bhavan's chairman Damodar Naik.
iii. The book narrates the story of Nathuram Vinayakrao Godse who died an untimely death and his brother suffered a life of immense mental torture. It also speaks of the family of Godse who faced countless abuses and humiliations.
