1. Durga Prasad appointed as DG of CRPF

i. Union Government has appointed senior IPS officer K Durga Prasad has Director General (DG) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Decision in this regard was taken by Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
ii. Earlier he had served as Director of the Special Protection Group (SPG) which is nodal agency responsible to provide security to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers and their family members.

2. Japan to set up plant for US-2 amphibious aircraft in India

i. Japan’s ShinMaywa Industries is planning to set up manufacturing plant of US-2 amphibious aircraft in India under ‘Make in India’ initiative to cater to international demands.
ii. The move comes as Indian Navy plans to procure 6 such aircrafts between 2017 and 2022 by signing a government to government deal i.e. initial purchase being off the shelf.

3. WHO declares Zika virus outbreak as International Emergency

i. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared an international public health emergency over the explosive spread of the mosquito-borne Zika virus. It was announced after WHO’s emergency meeting of independent experts headed by WHO Director-General Margaret Chan.
ii. The meeting was convened in Geneva, Switzerland to assess the outbreak of the virus which is linked to birth defects in the Americas.
iii. Zika virus is a mosquito-borne virus transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.
iv. It is close cousin of other other vector-borne diseases like Dengue, Chikungunya and Yellow Fever transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes
v. The virus was first identified in 1947 in Uganda and its name has been derived from Zika Forest.

4. Archana Ramasundram becomes 1st woman DG of Sashastra Seema Bal

Archana Ramasundram becomes 1st woman DG of Sashastra Seema Bal
i. Senior IPS officer Archana Ramasundram (58) was appointed as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
ii. With this, she became first woman police officer to lead a central police force that guards the country’s international borders. She will be in office till the date of her superannuation 30 September 2016.
iii. Prior to this appointment, she was the Director of New Delhi based National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). She is 1980-batch IPS officer of Tamil Nadu Cadre.

5. RBI rates unchanged in 6th bi-monthly monetary policy review

i. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its sixth bi-monthly monetary policy review for year 2016 has maintained status quo in key policy interest rate.
ii. The key policy interest rates were kept unchanged on the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation in the country. RBI has kept its stance on the credit policy accommodative.
iii. Repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF): unchanged at 6.75 per cent.
iv. Reverse repo rate under the LAF: unchanged at 5.75 per cent.
v. Marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate has unchanged at 7.75 per cent.
vi. Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of scheduled banks: Unchanged at 4.0 per cent of net demand and time liability (NDTL).
vii.Continuation of liquidity under overnight repos at 0.25 per cent of bank-wise NDTL at the LAF repo rate.
viii. Continuation of liquidity under 14-day term repos as well as longer term repos of up to 0.75 per cent of NDTL of the banking system through auctions.

6. Bangladesh Cabinet approved draft of Citizenship Law, 2016 expanding scope for dual citizenship

i. Bangladesh Cabinet approved the draft of a proposed Citizenship Law, 2016 that was framed by amalgamating two existing laws and expanding scopes for dual citizenship for expatriate Bangladeshi nationals.
ii. The new Law was proposed by amending the existing the Citizenship Act 1951 and consolidating it with the Bangladesh Citizenship Temporary Provisions Order 1972 to help future citizens in the complex immigration world.
iii. Before this, a provision was available for Bangladeshis having nationality of the UK and the US only.

7. Jai Kumar Garg appointed as MD and CEO of Corporation Bank

i. The Union Government appointed Jai Kumar Garg as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Corporation Bank for a period of three years.
ii. Garg took charge of the public sector bank on 1 February 2016, succeeding S R Bansal, who superannuated from services as CMD on 31 January 2016.

8. Saroj Kumar Jha appointed Senior Director for Fragility, Conflict and Violence Group at World Bank

i. An Indian national Saroj Kumar Jha was in news as he was appointed as the Senior Director for the Fragility, Conflict and Violence Group at the World Bank on 1 February 2016.
ii. He was appointed to provide strategic leadership to address the challenge of fragility, conflict and violence, working across the Bank Group and in close collaboration with partnes.
iii. The WB President Jim Young Kim assigned him the new role.
iv. Earlier to this, he was the World Bank Regional Director for Central Asia based in Almaty, Kazakhstan since February 2012. He also worked as the World Bank's Global Manager for Disaster Risk Management Practice.
