1. Sapna Devi wins gold medal in women Wushu Taulu competition
i. India’s Sapna Devi has won gold for India in the women Wushu Taulu (Changquan) Competition at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG). She won the medal after scoring 9.45 pts.
ii. The silver medal was won by Susmita Tamang of Nepal with a score of 8.72 and bronze medal was won by Nazia Parvaiz of Pakistan with a score of 6:30 pts.
2. Joshna Chinappa wins gold medal in women’s individual squash at SAG
i. India’s ace squash player Joshna Chinappa has won the gold medal in women’s individual category at the 12th South Asian Games (SAG).
ii. In the final match played at R G Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, she defeated Pakistan’s Maria Wazir by 10-12, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 score. With this she became first Indian squash player to win individual gold medal in 2016 SAG.
iii. Nasir Iqbal of Pakistan won the on the gold medal in men’s individual category at the 12th SAG. In the final match, he defeated Farhan Zaman of Pakistan by 14-12, 11-7, 11-9 score.
3. Noted Urdu poet Nida Fazli passes away
i. Renowned Urdu Poet and well known Bollywood lyricist Nida Fazli passed away in Mumbai, Maharashtra following a heart attack. He was 78 years old. He was best known among singers and fans for his elegant presentation of ghazals, nazm and dohaas.
ii. He has 24 books to his credit in Urdu, Hindi and Gujarati languages. Some of his books are assigned as school textbooks in Maharashtra.
iii. Famous - Lafzon ke Phool (collection of sher-o-shayari), Mor Naach (collected works) in 1978, Mulaqaten (character-sketches), Aankh aur Khwab ke Darmiyan, Safar Mein Dhuup to Hogi, etc.
4. Chettinad Cotton Saree gets Indian Handloom tag
i. The Union textile Ministry has bestowed the Indian Handloom Brand tag on Chettinad cotton saris for its unique designs and identity.
ii. This tag was bestowed under the India Handloom Brand Scheme after checking its various quality parameters stipulated by the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
iii. The Ministry also has offered a logo to use the brand for marketing the product. It will also enable weavers of these saris to promote the material in the international market.
5. CPCB releases National Air Quality Indices for 24 cities
i. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has released National Air Quality Indices (AQI) for 24 cities across India in the month of January 2016.
ii. In the list Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) and Muzzafarpur (Bihar) were on the top with an AQI value of 409 points each and were coded as ‘severe’ in terms of air pollution in January 2016.
6. India-Nepal Combined Military Exercise Surya Kiran IX begins at Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand
i. The 9th edition of India-Nepal Combined Military Exercise Surya Kiran IX has commenced at Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. It will culminate on February 21, 2015.
ii. The 14-day-long combined battalion Level exercise is being conducted under the aegis of Panchshul Brigade of Central Command.
7. Former Prime Minister of Nepal Sushil Koirala passes away
i. Former Prime Minister of Nepal and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala passed away due to Pneumonia in capital city Kathmandu. He was 79.
ii. Mr. Koirala was elected as 37th Prime Minister of Nepal from February 10, 2014 till September 2015. He ceased from office of PM after new republic constitution of Nepal was promulgated under his leadership.
iii. He had lost election for PM post as per new Constitution to incumbent PM Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli in October 2015.
8. New Zealand cricketer Brendon Barrie McCullum retired from One-Day Internationals
i. New Zealand cricketer Brendon Barrie McCullum retired from One-Day Internationals (ODIs). He announced his retirement on 22 December 2015.
ii. He made his debut in ODIs as a 20-year-old batsman in 2001 against Australia at Sydney and he played his against the same side in 2016.
iii. He made his test debut against South Africa in 2003 and has played 99 tests so far and would retire from tests after playing two tests against Australia in February 2016.
iv. He played 260 ODIs and scored 6083 runs matches. They include 5 centuries and 31 half-centauries.
9. DGCA signed grant agreement with USTDA for India Aviation Safety Technical Assistance Phase II
i. India’s the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and United States Technical Development Agency (USTDA) were on 9 February 2016 signed the grant agreement for India Aviation Safety Technical Assistance Phase II in New Delhi.
ii. The phase II of the project is aimed at sustaining efforts undertaken during 2014 for restoration of IASA Category 1 status and bringing in more systemic improvements in the area of operation, airworthiness and licensing. It will include components on general aviation and business aviation.
