1. The 2016 Group of Twenty (G20) Summit was held in Hangzhou, China from 4th to 5th September 2016 to discuss efforts to reform global economic governance. The theme of 2016 G20 Summit: “Toward an Innovative, Invigorated, Interconnected and Inclusive World Economy”.

2. The Union Health Ministry has recently launched the “Leprosy Case Detection Campaign (LCDC)” to eradicate leprosy from the country.

3. Indian researchers have made a major discovery by understanding the mechanisms by which preterm births (between 28 and 32 weeks of gestation) occur. Normally, a pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, but in case of preterm births has gestation between 28 and 32 weeks. India with 35% accounts for the highest burden of preterm births in the world.

4. Assam-based ecologist and conservation activist Bibhuti Lahkar has won prestigious ‘Heritage Heroes Award’ of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

5. A newly discovered fish of the genus Tosanoides was in September 2016 named in honour of US president Barack Obama for his commitment to protect nature through the expansion of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

6. A team of scientists have discovered a new Ghost Snake Species of elusive, pale grey reptiles dwelling at the Ankarana National Park in Madagascar. The findings were published in the journal Copeia.

7. The World Health Organisation certified Sri Lanka a malaria-free nation. Sri Lanka is the second country in the WHO South-East Asia Region to eliminate malaria after Maldives.

8. The Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) of Malappuram, Kerala was conferred with the 2016 Unesco Confucius Prize for Literacy. The award was conferred on the JSS in recognition of its literacy-linked skill development activities among the underprivileged in rural areas.

9. Action movie star, writer, director and martial artist Jackie Chan will be given an honorary Academy (Oscar) Award for his extraordinary achievements in the movies.

10. The 28th ASEAN Summit will begin in Laos capital Vientiane. Leaders will review the progress of implementation of ASEAN Community Blueprints 2025. Several important documents aimed to improve lives of ASEAN people will be adopted highlighting the groupings commitment to realising the people oriented, people centered ASEAN.

11. The UK has appointed an ambassador to Iran for the first time since 2011, as part of its aims for more productive co-operation.

The Foreign Office announcement comes one year after the reopening of the British Embassy in Tehran. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said this is an important moment in the relationship between the UK and Iran. Nicholas Hopton, a former British ambassador to Qatar and Yemen, will take up the role of ambassador. The British embassy in Tehran was closed after it was stormed and ransacked by protesters in November 2011. The embassy was reopened in August 2015 by then-British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and the two countries resumed ties on Charge d’Affaires level.

12. India’s batsman Virat Kohli held on to the number two position in the latest ICC ODI rankings for batsmen released , while Rohit Sharma dropped a place to 7th. Opener Shikhar Dhawan maintained his 8th position. England batsman Joe Root has surged into the top five of rankings for the first time after a stellar performance against Pakistan.

13. World number one Serena Williams has set a new record of most number of Grand Slam matches wins. Serena defeated Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan, 6-2, 6-3 to enter the quarterfinals and record her 308th majors victory. The 34-year old American surpassed Roger Federer in the all-time list.

14. ISRO is all set to launch the GSLV-F05 carrying advanced weather satellite INSAT-3DR from the spaceport of Sriharikota, about 110 km, on September 8. “GSLV-F05/INSAT 3DR mission is scheduled to be launched on September 8 at 1610 hours from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota”, Indian Space Research Organisation said on its website.

15. Senior CPI-ML (Liberation) leader Swapan Mukherjee, who played a major role in organising the party and its campaigns, died in Chandigarh after a heart attack.
