1. Worst coral die-off recorded at Australia’s Great Barrief Reef
i. Scientists have recorded worst mass coral bleaching event on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. It has killed more corals than ever before, sounding the alarm over the delicate ecosystem. It is estimated nearly two-thirds of 2,300-kilometre long reef or 700 km stretch of coral in the Great Barrier Reef’s northern part have died in the past nine months.
 ii. This is the worst die-off ever recorded in Great Barrier Reef and also the largest ever recorded anywhere. However, the central and southern sections of the reef are fared far better, with only 6% and 1% of the coral dead, respectively.

2. Sex Ratio at Birth at decline in India: CRS data
i. According new  data from Civil  Registration System ( CRS) released by the Office of the Registrar General of India, Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) continues to worsen in India.

3. Asia’s first cycle highway inaugurated in Uttar Pradesh
i. Asia’s first and longest cycle highway was inaugurated in Uttar Pradesh. It is also India’s first cycle highway. The 207-km-long cycle highway runs between Etawah and Agra.
ii.  It was inaugurated by state Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

4. Gross NPAs of PSBs touch over 6 lakh crores in July-September 2016
i. The Union Government has announced that the gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of the Public sector banks (PSBs) have touched around 66 lakh 40 thousand in the three months period from July to September 2016.
ii. As on September 30, 2016 gross NPAs of the PSBs in the country rose to  Rs. 6,30,323 crore as against Rs. 5,50,346 crore by end of June 2016. It shows increase of Rs. 79,977 crore NPAs on quarter on quarter basis during this period.

5.Union Government to introduce Direct Transfer of Fertilizer Subsidy
i. The Union Government has decided to introduce Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system for fertilizer subsidy payments.
ii. Under the proposed system, 100% subsidy on various fertilizer grades will be released to the manufacturers and importers on basis of actual sales made by the retailer to the beneficiaries.

6.Lt General AK Bhatt appointed as new DGMO
i. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Lt-General A K Bhatt as the new director-general of military operations (DGMO).
ii.  He will succeed Lt-General Ranbir Singh who has been promoted and will take over 1 Corps (headquarters at Mathura), command of a strike corps on the Western border.

7. Union Government introduces Taxation Laws (Second Amendment) Bill, 2016
i. The Union Government has introduced the Taxation Laws (Second Amendment) Bill, 2016 (‘the Bill’) in the Parliament. The bill amends existing tax laws to impose a higher rate of tax and penalty in respect of undisclosed incomes.
ii.  It proposes, Taxation and Investment Regime for Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana, 2016 (PMGKY), an anti-poverty scheme.

8. Akodara becomes India’s first Digital Village
i. Akodara village in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat has earned the coveted tag of becoming India’s first digital village in India.
ii. The village with a total population of 1,191 people and 250 households uses a various cashless system for payments of goods and services. All transactions in the village are carried out through digital modes like SMS, net-banking or debit cards.

9. Iranian film Daughter wins Golden Peacock award at 47 IFFI
i. Iranian film “Daughter” has won the coveted Golden Peacock award at the 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). It has been directed by Reza Mirkarimi. It is a family drama set in southern Iran. It brings out intergenerational conflict between a strict father and a young daughter.
ii. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore conferred these awards during the concluding ceremony of IFFI held in Goa.

10. M. M. Kutty appointed Delhi Chief Secretary
i. Senior IAS officer M. M. Kutty has been appointed  the Delhi Chief Secretary. 
ii. He replaced K. K. Sharma, who has transferred to the Union HRD Ministry as an officer on special duty (OSD).
iii. The Centre has sent back Kutty to his parent Union Territories cadre before completion of the tenure of his Central deputation.

11. Pankaj Advani claimed bronze medal at IBSF World Snooker Championship
i. Fifteen-time world champion Pankaj Advani suffered a 2-7 loss in the semifinals against Andrew Pagett of Wales to settle for a bronze medal at the IBSF World Snooker Championship.

BJP appoints Nityanand Rai as new party President of Bihar
i. The member of parliament of Bhartiya Janta Party, Nityanand Rai has been appointed new party President of Bihar while MP Manoj Tiwari will be the new party Unit Chief of Delhi.
Party President Amit Shah has approved their appointments.
ii. Mr Rai will replace Mangal Pandey and Manoj Tiwari with Satish Upadhyay.

13. Virat Kohli moves up to 3rd spot in ICC rankings
i. Indian captain Virat Kohli has moved up to a career-best third place in the latest ICC Rankings for test batsmen following his useful contribution in India’s eight-wicket win over England in the third Test at Mohali that helped the hosts have a 2-0 lead in the five-match cricket series.
