i. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for the assembly elections in five states– Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.
ii. With the Election Commission announcement the Model code of conduct has come into effect. Counting of votes for all five states will take place on 11 March 2017.
2. Justice JS Khehar sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of India
i. Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar was sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
ii. He was administered oath to the office by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. With this, he became the first person from Sikh communitry to become the CJI.
3. Government launches Swachh Bharat Survekshan 2017 in 500 cities
i. The Union Ministry of Urban Development launched Swachh Survekshan 2017 to rank 500 cities/towns across the country on cleanliness with a population of 1 lakh and above The survey will be conducted by Quality Council of India (QCI) under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan in a bid to encourage competition to improve sanitation.
4. Google Doodle pays tribute to India’s social reformer Savitribai Phule
i. Search engine giant Google honoured India’s 19th Century social reformer Savitribai Phule on the occasion of her 186th birth anniversary (3 January 2017) by dedicating a doodle on its webpage.
ii. The ‘doodle’ had a narration by New Delhi-based NGO Zubaan, with colourful paintings by Malvika Asher on the different historical aspects of Savitribai’s life.
5. RBI appoints Surekha Marandi as executive director
i. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Surekha Marandi as its Executive Director (ED). She was appointed in place of U S Paliwal who retired on December 31, 2016.
ii. In her new role, she will look after Consumer Education and Protection Department, Financial Inclusion and Development Department, and Secretary’s Department of the RBI.
6. Isro to launch record 103 satellites in one go in February
i. ISRO will launch a record 103 satellites in one go using its workhorse PSLV-C37 in the first week of February, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pet South Asian satellite project will take off in March.
ii. As many as 100 of the satellites set for launch in February belong to foreign nations, including the US and Germany.
7. Scientists have identified a brand-new organ inside human body
i. Scientists in Ireland have classified a brand-new organ inside human body, one that has been hiding in plain sight in our digestive system, proving the anatomic description laid down over 100 years of anatomy as incorrect.
ii. Researchers hope that the reclassification will aid better understanding and treatment of abdominal and digestive diseases.
8. MK Stalin elected as DMK working president
i. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M.K. Stalin was on Wednesday elected as the party's working president in the general council meeting.
ii. The meeting scheduled for December 20, had to be cancelled in view of party president M. Karunanidhi's hospitalisation.
9. Britain Ambassador to the Europe Union Quits
i. i.The U.K.’s ambassador to the European Union Ivan Rogers resigned from his post.
ii.Sir Mark Ivan Rogers KCMG (born 1960) is a senior British civil servant, who was the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the European Union from 4 November 2013 until his resignation on 3 January 2017
10. Mithali Raj to lead India in Women's World Cup Qualifier
i. i.Seasoned player Mithali Raj will skipper the Indian women’s cricket team for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup qualifiers to be played from February 3 to 21 in Colombo.
ii.The team comprises of most of the prominent names in the squad which guided India to clinch the women’s T20 Asia Cup 2016 title in December last year by beating arch-rivals Pakistan.
