Daily GK Update: 4th October 2017, Important Current Affairs

1. Government Names Rajnish Kumar as SBI's Next Chairman
i. The Government named Rajnish Kumar as the new chairman of State Bank of India, for a three-year term. Kumar will succeed Arundhati Bhattacharya.
ii. At present, Rajnish Kumar is one of the managing directors of SBI. The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) had interviewed four managing directors for the post at the end of June and had recommended a name to the government. The government had extended Bhattacharya’s tenure for a year, with effect from October 7, 2016.

2. Fourth Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement Released by RBI
i. On the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation at its meeting, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 6.0 percent.
ii. Consequently, the Reverse Repo Rate (RRR) under the LAF remains at 5.75 percent, and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 6.25 percent. The projection of real Gross Value Added (GVA) growth for 2017-18 has been revised down to 6.7 percent from the August 2017 projection of 7.3 percent, with risks evenly balanced.

3. 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Announced
i. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2017 to Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson "for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution". 
ii. About three winners-
1. Jacques Dubochet is from University of Lausanne, Switzerland
2. Joachim Frank is from Columbia University, New York, USA
3. Richard Henderson is from MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK.

4. First US Crude Oil Shipment Arrives in Paradip
i. The first US crude oil cargo of 1(point)6 million barrels bought by Indian Oil Corporation from the US reached Paradip Port, Odisha. Indian Oil will process the crude at its East-Coast base refineries, located at Paradip, Haldia, Barauni and Bongaigaon.
ii. Indian Oil, which became the first Indian public sector refiner to source US crude has placed a cumulative order 3.9 million barrel from the US.

5. Chairman NHAI Launches New Website and PMIS Mobile App 
i. The Chairman of National Highways Authority of India Shri Deepak Kumar launched a world-class, new multilingual website of the organization. He also launched a Project Monitoring Information System (PMIS) Moblie App that will facilitate close, in-house monitoring of NHAI projects on a mobile phone.
ii. To ensure timely delivery of its projects, the NHAI is now digitally monitoring them through a state-of-the-art Project Monitoring Information System (PMIS).

6. Soumya Swaminathan, New Deputy Director General at WHO
i. The World Health Organization (WHO) appointed Soumya Swaminathan one of two Deputy Directors General. This is the first time such a post has been ever created within the organisation. The position is also the highest post held by an Indian in the WHO.
ii. Dr Swaminathan is currently the Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). She has been appointed as Deputy Director General for Programmes and Ms Jane Ellison, who was Special Parliamentary Adviser to the UK’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, has been appointed as a Deputy Director General for Corporate Operations (DDC).

7. Karnataka Launches mid-day Meals Scheme for Pregnant Women
i. The Karnataka government launched the Rs. 302-crore Mathru Poorna scheme, aimed at providing free mid-day meals to pregnant and lactating women in rural areas.
ii. The meals, which will be provided in Anganwadi centres, will include an egg, rice, pulses, vegetables, and milk. This is aimed at reducing child malnutrition and in turn curb infant mortality. 

8. Country’s First ITI for Divyangans in Assam
i. Foundation stone for the first ever Industrial Training Institute for the Divyangans exclusively was laid at Dibrugarh ITI Complex at Borboruah, Dibrugarh by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
ii. As per the guidelines of National Council for Vocational Training, the ITI will have sixty seats for three different trades with 20 seats per trade. The three different trades included in the curriculum are Computer Operator and Programming Assistant, Cutting and Sewing Technology and Hair & Skin Care.

9. Russia Launches ‘World’s Biggest & Most Powerful’ Nuclear Icebreaker
i. Russia has launched the world's largest nuclear-powered icebreaker ship in a bid to expand its strategic presence in the resource-rich, terrain of the Arctic.
ii. The massive vessel, named Sibir (Siberia), was developed as part of a huge push by the Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation to open up crucial shipping lanes in the icy Northern Sea Route.

10. GDP to Hit $6 trillion by 2027 on Digital Leap: Morgan Stanley Report
i. India is likely to be the world’s fastest-growing large economy in the next 10 years, driven by digitisation, favourable demographics, globalisation and reforms, according to the Morgan Stanley report.
ii. According to the global financial services major, the trend line in India’s annual GDP growth has been accelerating to 6.9 percent in 2000s, from 5.8 percent in the 1990s.

11. Bangladesh Signs $4.5-bn Loan Deal With India
i. Bangladesh signed a $4.5 billion third line of credit (LoC) agreement with India for its infrastructure and social sector development. The agreement was signed in the presence of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and his Bangladeshi counterpart A M A Muhith.
ii. Economic Relations Division Secretary Kazi Shofiqul Azam signed the deal on behalf of Bangladesh while Managing Director of the Export-Import Bank of India (Exim) David Rasquinha signed for India.

12. Param Shah Appointed as FICCI UK Director
i. The apex industry body, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) announced the appointment of Param Shah as the new Director for the United Kingdom (UK) operations.
ii. Shah will succeed Pratik Dattani whose tenure with FICCI ended recently.

13. Airtel Gets Approval for Tigo Merger
i. Bharti Airtel has received Ghana’s National Communications Authority’s approval for the merger between Bharti Ghana (Airtel) and Millicom Ghana (Tigo), subject to certain conditions.
ii. This merger will result in an entity which will be the second largest mobile network operations in the country.

14. Important Cabinet Approvals- 04th October 2017
i. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has given the following set of approvals. The full list of Cabinet Approvals is given as follows.
ii. The Cabinet has approved-
  1. The Extradition Treaty between India and Lithuania- The Treaty would provide a legal framework for seeking extradition of terrorists, economic offenders and other criminals from and to Lithuania,
  2. The MoU between India and Switzerland on Technical Cooperation in Rail Sector,
  3. MoU on Upgradation of the Women’s Police Training Centre at Yamethin, Myanmar,
  4. Cabinet approved the renaming of Kandla Port as Deendayal Port.

15. 2018 Commonwealth Games Baton Arrived in New Delhi
i. The Queen's Baton for the 2018 Commonwealth Games arrived in New Delhi, India. The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held in Australia. The Baton was received by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) joint secretary Rakesh Gupta and it will travel to Agra.
ii. It will then be taken to Nainital in Uttarakhand on October 5. The main CWG Baton Relay event will be held on October 8 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

1. US biology trio wins Nobel Medicine Prize
  1. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology (or Medicine) went to US geneticists Jeffrey C. Hall (72-year), Michael Rosbash (73-years) and Michael W. Young (68-years) for their discoveries on how plants, animals, and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth's revolutions.
  2. The trio will share the prize sum of nine million Swedish kronor (about 1.1 million US Dollars.)
  3. For many years, scientists have known that living organisms, including humans, have an internal clock that helps them adapt to the rotation of the earth.
  4. The clock influences such biological functions as hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism.
  5. Using the fruit fly as a model organism, the scientists isolated a gene that controls the daily biological rhythm.

2. 1st October: International Day of Older Persons
  1. The International Day of Older Persons is observed on 1st October every year.
  2. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
  3. The theme of this year is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions, and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”
  4. The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaarwarchand Gehlot flagged of Walkathon for older persons at India Gate in New Delhi to mark the ‘International day of Older Persons’.
  5. The Ministry is implementing two important schemes namely 'Vriddh Jan Grah Yojana'and 'Day Care Centres for Older Persons'.

3. 2nd October: World Habitat Day
  1. The United Nations (UN) designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter.
  2. It is also intended to remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.
  3. The theme of 2017 is 2017 ‘Housing Policies: Affordable Homes’.

4. 2nd October: International Day of Non-Violence
  1. International Day of Non-violence is observed on 2nd October throughout the world on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  2. This day in India is also celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti to mark birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who was leader of Indian independence movement and pioneer of philosophy of non-violence.

5. President Ram Nath Kovind to embark on 4-day visit to Djibouti, Ethiopia
  1. Today, President Ram Nath Kovind will embark on a four-day visit to Djibouti and Ethiopia.
  2. This will be the first ever visit at the level of Head of State or Government from India to Djibouti since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
  3. President will hold official talks with his Djibouti counterpart Ismail Omar Guelleh.
  4. India has extended lines of credit amounting to 49.13 million dollars to Djibouti for construction of a cement plant.
  5. President will be in Ethiopia from 4th to 6th of this month.
  6. He will be the first visit by an Indian President to Ethiopia after almost 45 years.
  7. President will hold talks with his counterpart Dr. Malatu Teshome and also deliver a lecture at the University of Addis Ababa.

6. President appoints Commission to examine OBC Sub-categorisation
  1. President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed a five-member Commission to examine the sub-categorization of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
  2. Justice (Retd.) G. Rohini will be the chairperson of the Commission.
  3. The Commission will examine the extent of inequitable distribution of benefits of reservation among the castes or communities included in the broad category of OBCs with reference to such classes included in the Central List.

7. First US crude oil shipment arrives in Paradip Port
  1. The first US crude oil cargo of 1.6 million barrels bought by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) from the US reached Paradip Port, in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha.
  2. Now, Indian Oil will process the crude at its East-Coast base refineries, located at Paradip, Haldia, Barauni and Bongaigaon.
  3. Indian Oil has become the first Indian public sector refiner to source US crude has placed a cumulative order 3.9 million barrel from the US.
  4. Bharat Petroleum (BP) has also placed orders from the US for about 2.95 million barrels and Hindustan Petroleum (HP) 1 million barrels for their Kochi and Vizag refineries.
  5. Now, the new arrangement would also provide price stability and energy security for India.

8. President Kovind declares Rural Gujarat as Open Defecation Free
  1. President Ram Nath Kovind has declared the Rural Gujarat as ODF (Open Defecation Free) at a function held at Kirti Mandir in Porbandar.
  2. He has felicitated rural women for achieving ODF status for rural Gujarat.
  3. President Kovind has also inaugurated the new Jetty and other facilities at Jafarabad Fishing Harbour and upgradation of Veraval and Porbandar fishing Harbour.
  4. He also inaugurated upgradation of Navibandar, Miyani & Salaya Fish Landing Centre and also lay the stone for the development of Mangrol Phase-III fishing Harbour.

9. Vice President unveils 1.80 metres tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi
  1. The Vice-President ‘M.Venkaiah Naidu’ unveiled a 1.80 meter tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his ‘148 Birth Anniversary’ at Rajghat Samadhi Complex, New Delhi.
  2. It is mounted on two feet high pedestal clad with granite.
  3. The famous message of Mahatma Gandhi “Be the Change You Wish to See” is inscribed on the front side.
  4. Installation of the Statue is a part of a large number of improvement works at Rajghat undertaken during the last three years.

10. Khandu announces to make Arunachal Open Defecation Free by this year-end
  1. The Arunachal Chief Minister ‘Pema Khandu’ has announced that Arunachal Pradesh shall be Open Defecation Free by 31th December this year.
  2. Sikkim is the only state in North East to achieve ODF free status and Arunachal to be the next.
  3. The state government is not only geared up to achieve ODF free status but has work list to maintain ODF free environment.
  4. The PHED department will come up with cleanliness protocol guidelines for panchayat to maintain ODF free status.

11. TRAI to come out with its views on net neutrality by Oct. end
  1. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman R S Sharma, TRAI will come out with its views on net neutrality by October-end.
  2. TRAI also start consultation on residual issues around over-the-top (OTT) applications soon.
  3. The telecom regulator has already concluded open house discussions around the issue of net neutrality and is in the process of drafting the recommendations.

12. GDP to hit USD 6 trillion by 2027 on digital leap: Morgan Stanley report
  1. According to the Morgan Stanley report, India is likely to be the world's fastest-growing large economy in the next 10 years.
  2. Earlier, the trend line in India's annual GDP growth has been accelerating to 6.9% (2000s), from 5.8% (1990s), and this momentum is likely to continue in the next decade as well.
  3. Morgan Stanley expects digitization will provide an enhancement of 50-75 bps to GDP growth and forecasted, India will grow to a 6-trillion-dollar economy and achieve upper-middle income status by 2026-27.
  4. India's real GDP growth to compound annually at 7.1% and nominal GDP growth to compound at 11.2%, over the coming decade.

13. Foreign funds pull out Rs 11,000 cr from Indian equities in Sept.
  1. According to the latest depository data, Foreign funds pulled out Rs. 11,392 crores from Indian equities in September this year.
  2. However, they pumped in Rs. 4,430 crores in debt markets during this period.
  3. The total investment by the foreign portfolio investors in equity markets stood at 34,350 crores.

14. Viswanathan Anand finishes joint-second in Isle of Man Championship
  1. Viswanathan Anand’ (India) capped his impressive run with another victory over grandmaster Hou Yifan (China) in the ninth and final round to end at joint second at the Isle of Man Chess Championship.
  2. Earlier, The World Champion Magnus Carlsen has won the title with 7.5 points.
  3. Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and Swapnil Dhopade finished at the joint third position at 6.5 points.
  4. Anand took 53 moves to overpower Yifan to finish with 7 points.

ii. It is the 108th time the prize has been awarded and was announced at the Nobel Forum at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. The winners will share a prize of 9m Swedish kronor (£825,000), and each receives a medal engraved with their name. 

2. Nation Pays Homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 148th Birth Anniversary
i. The nation pays homage to Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi on his 148th birth anniversary on 02nd October 2017. An all-religion prayer was also organised at Rajghat. A series of functions are planned to mark the occasion. 
ii. Mahatma Gandhi was born on 02nd October 1869 in Porbunder, a small town in Gujarat. He studied law in U.K and practised law in South Africa. In his autobiography "My experiments with Truth" Gandhiji read his childhood and teenage years, his marriage with Kasturba at the age of 13 and a pure devotion to his country.

3. International Day of Non-Violence: 02nd October
i. The International Day of Non-Violence is marked on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.
ii. According to General Assembly of United Nations resolution of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness". The resolution reaffirms "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence".

4. Nation Pays Homage to Former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri on his Birth Anniversary
i. The nation also pays homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary on 02nd October 2017.  Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 02nd October 1901 at Mughalsarai, a small railway town seven miles from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. 
ii. Lal Bahadur Shastri led the country during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 and gave the slogan - "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" which is remembered even today.

5. International Day of Older Persons: 01st October
i. On 14th December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons. This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing – which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing – and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly.

ii. In 1991, the General Assembly (by resolution 46/91) adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons. The theme of the International Day of Older Persons 2017 is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”

6. India, EU to Hold 14th Summit Talks in New Delhi
i. President of European Council, Donald Franciszek Tusk and President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker will be on a three-day visit to India to hold the 14th India-EU Summit on 6th of next month in New Delhi.
ii. The summit aims at deepening the India-EU Strategic Partnership and advance collaboration in priority areas for India’s growth and development. During their visit starting from 5th of October, they will also attend India-EU Business event on the sidelines of the summit.

7. Sikh man becomes first minority politician to lead major party in Canada
i. A 38-year-old Sikh lawyer was elected the leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, becoming the first non-white politician to head a major political party in the country.
ii. Jagmeet Singh, the Ontario provincial lawmaker, was elected on the first ballot to lead the party into the 2019 election against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberals. He won the decisive first-ballot victory over three other candidates by receiving 53.6 % of the vote.

8. Indian Entrepreneur wins UK Business Award for Innovative IT Solutions
i. A Ghana-based Indian entrepreneur has won a prestigious business award in the UK for his efforts to bring innovative IT solutions to Africa. 
ii. Birendra Sasmal, CEO of Subah, bagged the International Business Person of the Year at the Asian Achievers Awards in London for turning the company into a thriving IT, telecoms and manufacturing success story with operations across West Africa.

9. India opens two border crossing points with Myanmar, Bangladesh
i. India has opened two immigration check posts along the borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh. In a gazette notification, the Home Ministry stated the Central government has designated Zorinpui land check post in Lawngtlai district of Mizoram as an authorized immigration check post for entry into or exit from India with valid travel documents for all classes of passengers to or from Myanmar.
ii. The Central government has also designated Kawrpuichhuah land check post in Lunglei district of Mizoram as an authorized immigration check post for entry into or exit from India with valid travel documents for all classes of passengers to or from Bangladesh.

10. Burqa Ban Comes into Effect in Austria
i. Austria’s law banning face veils such as burkhas or niqabs has come into effect from now. according to the government, acceptance and respect of Austrian values are basic conditions for successful cohabitation between the majority Austrian population and people from third countries living in Austria.

Exemptions under certain conditions include items like clown disguises at cultural events, work wear such as medical masks, and scarves in cold weather. There are around 7 lakh Muslims in Austria.

11. China Marks 68th National Day: 01st October 2017
China marked the 68th National Day on 01st October 2017 with more than 115,000 people from across the country gathering at the Tian'anmen Square to watch the raising of the National Flag in Beijing. The National Day is celebrated with a week-long holiday.
Major parks in Beijing have been decorated with around 1.6 million potted flowers of 150 different species.
