1. Y.C Modi named National Investigation Agency Chief
i. Senior Indian Police Service officer ‘Y.C Modi’ (1984 batch- Assam-Meghalaya cadre) has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
ii. He will take over from Sharad Kumar (longest serving chief of the NIA) after he completes his tenure on 30th October this year.
iii. Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also approved the appointment of Modi as an officer on special duty (OSD) in NIA with immediate effect to ensure a smooth takeover.
iv. National Investigation Agency (NIA) is a central agency established by the Indian Government to combat terror in India.
v. The agency is empowered to deal with terror-related crimes across states without special permission from the states.
vi. The Agency came into existence with the enactment of the National Investigation Agency Act 2008 by the Parliament of India on 31st December 2008.

2. Rajni Kant Misra named Director General of the Sashastra Seema Bal
i. Senior IPS officer Rajni Kant Misra (1984 batch Uttar Pradesh cadre) has been appointed director general (DG) of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
ii. He will hold the post till the date of his superannuation (31st August 2019).
iii. Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is one of India's Central Armed Police Forces, currently under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
iv. As of 2017, it has 76,337 active personnel in 67 battalions.

3. Iceland Prime Minister ‘Bjarni Benediktsson’ resigns
i. Prime Minister of Iceland ‘Bjarni Benediktsson’ has given his resignation to the President ‘Gudni Th. Johannesson’.
ii. Earlier, Mr. Benediktsson took his office in January 2017, uniting his Independence Party, the Reform Party, and the centrists.
iii. The resignation paves the way for the new election to be held on 4thNovember 2017.

4. Airtel Payments Bank launches UPI enabled digital payments
i. India's first Payment Bank ‘Airtel Payments Bank’ integrated the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on its digital platform.
ii. In January 2017, Bharti Airtel launched Payments Bank in India to enable transactions on digital platforms.
iii. The initiative will allow bank customers to link their bank accounts to Bhim app and make UPI payments.

5. Current account deficit increases to 2.4% of GDP in first quarter: RBI
i. Current account deficit (CAD) of the first quarter of this fiscal widened to 2.4% of gross domestic product (14.3 billion dollars) as imports pushed the trade deficit.
 ii. Last year, it was 0.1% (401 million dollars) in the same period.
iii. On a sequential basis, the CAD also widened from0.6 % (3.4 billion dollars) of GDP in the fourth quarter of last fiscal.
iv. According to the RBI, widening of the year-on-year deficit was primarily on account of a higher trade deficit brought about by a larger increase in merchandise imports relative to exports.
v. The balance of payments for the April-June quarter increased to 11.40 billion dollars from 6.969 billion dollars in the year-ago period and net foreign direct investment in the reporting quarter almost doubled from its level at 7.2 billion dollars in the same period last year.

6. Google Tez UPI- based Digital Payments app launched in India
i. Vice-President of Google has launched a new digital payment app “Google tez” at an event in New Delhi, India.
ii. The app is based on UPI platform, allows payments direct from the bank accounts.
iii. The tez app is one of the most-simple forms of monetary transactions and available to Android as well as iOS users.
iv. It supports seven Indian Languages and more will be on the way. 

7. International Yoga Festival starts in Kashmir
i. Jammu and Kashmir governor N N Vohra has inaugurated the second International Yoga Festival and International Yoga Sports Championship 2017 in Kashmir.
ii. Around 300 participants from various parts of India, Vietnam, Taiwan, Canada, Bulgaria, USA, and Nepal are participating in the festival.
iii. The festival is being organized by the Yoga Society of Kashmir at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre.

8. New intelligence set-up of Sashastra Seema Bal made operational
i. The Union Home Minister ‘Rajnath Singh’ made operational the New Intelligence Set-up of Sashastra Seema Bal.
ii. He also launched the Welfare & Rehabilitation Board App and distributed scholarship to children of SSB martyrs.
iii. This new unit will gather information along the borders with Bhutan and Nepal, which are often used by criminals and Kashmiri militants returning from Pakistan.
iv. The SSB has now been declared as the lead intelligence agency for both these borders to tackle these issues effectively.
v. SSB guards the 1,751 km- long Indo-Nepal and the 699 km-long Indo-Bhutan borders.

9. Assam assembly adopts two child norm policy
i. According to the Assam’s health and family welfare minister, the service rules of the state government will be changed to give effect to two child norms for the state government employees.
ii. The policy seeks to bar those having more than two children from being elected or nominated to panchayat and other local bodies’ elections or government jobs.
iii. The policy stated government will consider bringing legislation to increase the reservation of women in eligible jobs up to 50 percent.

10. Union Govt. decides to form an inter-ministerial committee for safety measures in schools
i. The union govt. has decided to form an inter-ministerial committee to monitor implementation of safety measures in its schools across the country.
ii. A committee of six secretaries will be constituted to monitor the implementation and progress of the guidelines.
iii. It will conduct a series of meetings to develop a roadmap as well as a timeline for implementation of the measures recommended.

11. Japan Open Badminton Championship begins in Tokyo today
i. Today, the Japan Open Badminton Championship begins in Tokyo.
ii. In the opening round of the event, India’s P V Sindhu will take on Minatsu Mitani whom she defeated in the Korea Open.
iii. Kidambi Srikanth and Saina Nehwal will also return to action at the championship.

12. India's Purnima wins pentathlon gold at Asian indoor meet
i. Indian athlete ‘Purnima Hembram’ (24-year) bagged Gold in women's pentathlon event at the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan.
ii. Hembram broke the Indian record by scoring 4,062 points and won the event by more than 100 points.
iii. India also got two silvers, through Sanjivani Jadhav in women’s 3000m (9:26.34s) and Tejinder Singh Toor in men’s shot put (19.26m), and a bronze V. Neena in women’s long jump (6.04m).

13. Cyclist ‘Mark Beaumont’ breaks around the world record
i. Mark Beaumont (34-year) arrived in Paris having completed a circumnavigation of the globe by bicycle in 78 days 14 hours, and 40 minutes (cycled the 18,000-mile route).
ii. This beat his previous unsupported attempt by 116 days and beat the previous world record by 45 days.
iii. Mark was also awarded the Guinness World Records title for the most miles cycled in a month, from Paris to Perth, Australia, verified at 7,031 miles.
iv. He was on his bike for more than 16 hours a day and only slept for five hours each night.
