Daily GK Update: 3rd October 2017 Important Current Affairs

1. US biology trio wins Nobel Medicine Prize
  1. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology (or Medicine) went to US geneticists Jeffrey C. Hall (72-year), Michael Rosbash (73-years) and Michael W. Young (68-years) for their discoveries on how plants, animals, and humans adapt their biological rhythm so that it is synchronized with the Earth's revolutions.
  2. The trio will share the prize sum of nine million Swedish kronor (about 1.1 million US Dollars.)
  3. For many years, scientists have known that living organisms, including humans, have an internal clock that helps them adapt to the rotation of the earth.
  4. The clock influences such biological functions as hormone levels, sleep, body temperature and metabolism.
  5. Using the fruit fly as a model organism, the scientists isolated a gene that controls the daily biological rhythm.

2. 1st October: International Day of Older Persons
  1. The International Day of Older Persons is observed on 1st October every year.
  2. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
  3. The theme of this year is “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions, and Participation of Older Persons in Society.”
  4. The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaarwarchand Gehlot flagged of Walkathon for older persons at India Gate in New Delhi to mark the ‘International day of Older Persons’.
  5. The Ministry is implementing two important schemes namely 'Vriddh Jan Grah Yojana'and 'Day Care Centres for Older Persons'.

3. 2nd October: World Habitat Day
  1. The United Nations (UN) designated the first Monday of October of every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter.
  2. It is also intended to remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns.
  3. The theme of 2017 is 2017 ‘Housing Policies: Affordable Homes’.

4. 2nd October: International Day of Non-Violence
  1. International Day of Non-violence is observed on 2nd October throughout the world on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  2. This day in India is also celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti to mark birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi who was leader of Indian independence movement and pioneer of philosophy of non-violence.

5. President Ram Nath Kovind to embark on 4-day visit to Djibouti, Ethiopia
  1. Today, President Ram Nath Kovind will embark on a four-day visit to Djibouti and Ethiopia.
  2. This will be the first ever visit at the level of Head of State or Government from India to Djibouti since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
  3. President will hold official talks with his Djibouti counterpart Ismail Omar Guelleh.
  4. India has extended lines of credit amounting to 49.13 million dollars to Djibouti for construction of a cement plant.
  5. President will be in Ethiopia from 4th to 6th of this month.
  6. He will be the first visit by an Indian President to Ethiopia after almost 45 years.
  7. President will hold talks with his counterpart Dr. Malatu Teshome and also deliver a lecture at the University of Addis Ababa.

6. President appoints Commission to examine OBC Sub-categorisation
  1. President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed a five-member Commission to examine the sub-categorization of the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
  2. Justice (Retd.) G. Rohini will be the chairperson of the Commission.
  3. The Commission will examine the extent of inequitable distribution of benefits of reservation among the castes or communities included in the broad category of OBCs with reference to such classes included in the Central List.

7. First US crude oil shipment arrives in Paradip Port
  1. The first US crude oil cargo of 1.6 million barrels bought by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) from the US reached Paradip Port, in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha.
  2. Now, Indian Oil will process the crude at its East-Coast base refineries, located at Paradip, Haldia, Barauni and Bongaigaon.
  3. Indian Oil has become the first Indian public sector refiner to source US crude has placed a cumulative order 3.9 million barrel from the US.
  4. Bharat Petroleum (BP) has also placed orders from the US for about 2.95 million barrels and Hindustan Petroleum (HP) 1 million barrels for their Kochi and Vizag refineries.
  5. Now, the new arrangement would also provide price stability and energy security for India.

8. President Kovind declares Rural Gujarat as Open Defecation Free
  1. President Ram Nath Kovind has declared the Rural Gujarat as ODF (Open Defecation Free) at a function held at Kirti Mandir in Porbandar.
  2. He has felicitated rural women for achieving ODF status for rural Gujarat.
  3. President Kovind has also inaugurated the new Jetty and other facilities at Jafarabad Fishing Harbour and upgradation of Veraval and Porbandar fishing Harbour.
  4. He also inaugurated upgradation of Navibandar, Miyani & Salaya Fish Landing Centre and also lay the stone for the development of Mangrol Phase-III fishing Harbour.

9. Vice President unveils 1.80 metres tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi
  1. The Vice-President ‘M.Venkaiah Naidu’ unveiled a 1.80 meter tall bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his ‘148 Birth Anniversary’ at Rajghat Samadhi Complex, New Delhi.
  2. It is mounted on two feet high pedestal clad with granite.
  3. The famous message of Mahatma Gandhi “Be the Change You Wish to See” is inscribed on the front side.
  4. Installation of the Statue is a part of a large number of improvement works at Rajghat undertaken during the last three years.

10. Khandu announces to make Arunachal Open Defecation Free by this year-end
  1. The Arunachal Chief Minister ‘Pema Khandu’ has announced that Arunachal Pradesh shall be Open Defecation Free by 31th December this year.
  2. Sikkim is the only state in North East to achieve ODF free status and Arunachal to be the next.
  3. The state government is not only geared up to achieve ODF free status but has work list to maintain ODF free environment.
  4. The PHED department will come up with cleanliness protocol guidelines for panchayat to maintain ODF free status.

11. TRAI to come out with its views on net neutrality by Oct. end
  1. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman R S Sharma, TRAI will come out with its views on net neutrality by October-end.
  2. TRAI also start consultation on residual issues around over-the-top (OTT) applications soon.
  3. The telecom regulator has already concluded open house discussions around the issue of net neutrality and is in the process of drafting the recommendations.

12. GDP to hit USD 6 trillion by 2027 on digital leap: Morgan Stanley report
  1. According to the Morgan Stanley report, India is likely to be the world's fastest-growing large economy in the next 10 years.
  2. Earlier, the trend line in India's annual GDP growth has been accelerating to 6.9% (2000s), from 5.8% (1990s), and this momentum is likely to continue in the next decade as well.
  3. Morgan Stanley expects digitization will provide an enhancement of 50-75 bps to GDP growth and forecasted, India will grow to a 6-trillion-dollar economy and achieve upper-middle income status by 2026-27.
  4. India's real GDP growth to compound annually at 7.1% and nominal GDP growth to compound at 11.2%, over the coming decade.

13. Foreign funds pull out Rs 11,000 cr from Indian equities in Sept.
  1. According to the latest depository data, Foreign funds pulled out Rs. 11,392 crores from Indian equities in September this year.
  2. However, they pumped in Rs. 4,430 crores in debt markets during this period.
  3. The total investment by the foreign portfolio investors in equity markets stood at 34,350 crores.

14. Viswanathan Anand finishes joint-second in Isle of Man Championship
  1. Viswanathan Anand’ (India) capped his impressive run with another victory over grandmaster Hou Yifan (China) in the ninth and final round to end at joint second at the Isle of Man Chess Championship.
  2. Earlier, The World Champion Magnus Carlsen has won the title with 7.5 points.
  3. Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and Swapnil Dhopade finished at the joint third position at 6.5 points.
  4. Anand took 53 moves to overpower Yifan to finish with 7 points.
